Just saw the blu of TUC and was sad to see just how much DNR has been applied. That being said it was my first experience with the theatrical cut of the film and I enjoyed it more than the previous version. I also really prefer the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio; it makes for a much better presentation.

These badly need to be remastered (except 'Khan), but given how poorly Paramount treats catalog titles, I now think it's unlikely.

Indeed. What's worse is that the movies don't even need any heavy lifting; just take the existing un-DNR'ed masters - as demonstrated by the unmolested clips on the Captain's Table featurettes - give 'em a fat encode and slap 'em on a disc.

Paramount, I WILL PAY YOU ALL OVER AGAIN just for doing the bare minimum of work on these movies. Thanks.

P.S.

Actually, Undiscovered Country could REALLY do with a new transfer but that's it, honest!!!

Define easily. The theatrical cuts of TWOK and TUC were created on film. The DCs were not. They're doable for sure, but those edits don't currently exist on film, only SD video. They'd have to recreate the cuts, assuming the film elements from the extra footage still exists.

Star Trek movies aren't standard catalog titles. Remastered movies would undoubtedly sell quite well.

I'm sure the film elements do exist. I'm not sure they will ever re-do the effects on the director(s) cut to make it acceptable for blu.

I know that the new FX were all produced and rendered in standard def.

However, I was sure that when the Director's cut DVD came out, they had a special screening of it in LA or someplace. If they could produce a 35mm version for a showing on the big screen, why can't they produce a BD from that print? I might be wrong, but I seem to remember them having a screening.

Even so, since they were willing to do the entire original and tng series w/ new special fx, they might just might be willing to redo the Director's cut of TMP in hi def. Maybe.

I was wondering that too, about the screening. But the tv series and the films are now in separate hands, so it's not as likely as one would hope.

Yes better transfers are a must for all I would say for Khan and maybe Nemesis (not this set I know). Particular attention could be pointed at Generations (again different set) but of all 10 older films Generations I thought had by far the worst transfer.

I consider "The Undiscovered Country" easily/by far the worst Blu-Ray represantation of all the Star Trek films.

Khan looks the best of all 10. It was the only one to be restored and remastered.

Have you seen what they did for the TV show and for NEXT GENERATION? I say it's no longer a question of if but a question of when.

They're so busy with doing the TV shows that I wouldn't count on that happening even remotely soon if they do it.

Of the TOS films, sure. But Insurrection is even worse, I don't think I've actually seen worse DNR than that on any film, let alone a Trek movie.

Rendered? Yes. Produced? No. The alternate commentary for the Director's Cut, which was available for some time on startrek.com talked about this in depth.

At one point, there was talk of a theatrical release of the film. The effects were created for rendering in HD. When the theatrical project died, Paramount ordered that the final renders would be done in SD despite serious protests from the team working on it. The team felt that even without a theatrical release on the immediate horizon, it would be shortsighted to not make a copy with future potential. Paramount nixed the idea, but the team kept all the original files.

So the original effects won't have to be created from scratch, but they will have to be rendered. That will still take time and money though, so it will have to wait for a time when Paramount deems the cost worth their while.

Comparing it to the TNG sets though is not a reasonable comparison
1. Two different companies with different budgets and priorities
2. Drastically different challenges of restoring the film
3. (Most importantly) No amount of blu-ray sales in the world will justify the cost of TNG's restoration. That was done to continue the show being a viable sale for syndication markets for ten years - although blu-ray sales certainly sweetened the deal. There's no comparable market for something like TMP.

Rendering them now can be done on a home PC for a few hundred bucks.
Remember this was stuff originally created in 2001 we're talking about.

It's all about marketing and when Paramount feels they can get the best return on their money by rereleasing it.

I know it's not a very popular film in the series but the "god" scene in the final frontier needs its contrast and brightness sorted out. It's brightened and boosted far too much, it looks awful.
