Dude...then why are you reading this thread? Everyone posting on this thread is a musical lover. If you're not, then don't bother posting.

For crying out loud...maybe I should run over to the Beowulf thread and state what a piece of crap I know it to be. Same thing as what you're doing.

All these answers and not one person wants The Blues Brothers? I am shocked! I adore that movie.

My Fair lady

Oklahoma (Todd A-O version, if it can be restored - the version on the last DVD release was quite poor. This was originally filmed in the Todd-AO format at 30 fps and should look great on blu-ray for those of us without 120 Hz displays)

Jesus Christ Superstar (recent version of possible)
Cats (made for DVD version IF it was filmed or recorded in hi-def)
Evita (DVD version is letterboxed, not anamorphic)
HR Pufenstuf
Amadeus (I doubt this is, strictly speaking, a musical)

Are musicals strictly films in which the characters sing as part of the story?

There are others that don't have signing but may be based on musical themes or topics (Amadeus, Immortal, Beloved).

Other question -- Don't most strict musicals have dancing or choreography? (I can't think of any that don't.)

Although I've never watched a complete musical with them (my experience is confined to the clips in the That's Entertainment series), I don't believe that Nelson Eddy and Janette McDonald ever danced. Anybody else know if the studios added others to their musicals who did dance?

Musicals are stage works or film works in which the music moves the story or takes the place of story elements/emotions.

For example, Madonna in a montage showing her getting dressed can't cover the same ground as quickly as "Rainbow High" in Evita (she was abysmal in the film). For those who think she was good, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyTVxkBO0Nw. Patti'll show ya how it's done.

Example, Maria walking around on a mountaintop can't convey the emotion and serenity that she feeling at the moment.

Example, a bunch of people *****ing at each other on the stage of a Las Vegas theatre will never have the same impact as "It's All Over" in Dreamgirls.

Example, Bette Midler walking onto a stage and saying "Kids suck" will never have the electric jolt that "Rose's Turn" has.

I would classify Amadeus as a musical simply because the music gives the emotion of the characters even if they aren't singing.

Movies like Saturday Night Fever and Fame and Flashdance aren't musicals...because the music doesn't play the same role in the story as the above films.

Hi Kristin. I was curious if you own any/many of the foreign films you like on DVD? i.e.: did they produce them on DVD?

Yes, and yes. Latcho Drom was produced in Japan on DVD. All the others I listed on this thread are on DVD in Europe and/or America.

Most of the films I've listed in whole forum are out on DVD (and I do own them) with the exception of a few that have not to my knowledge made it to DVD.

Yes, I am hoping. Some would be absolutely lovely on blu-ray (if transfered well, etc).
