Default Blu-Ray Won So Where's MGM?

I'm curious as to what is going on with MGM now that Blu-Ray is the victor in the high definition format war... I would really like to see Hannibal come to Blu-ray my favorite movie in the series... Ridley Scott is the man... Walk that aisle...

Remastering many of the titles that weren't done right in the DVD days. They've discovered a large percentage of the catalog titles they want to put out simply look like crap, and rather than ship subpar discs, they're holding off on releases

Death at a Funeral is unlikely to be released on Blu for a long time in the US at least, to my mutual great dissapointment

Hannibal was announced but was postponed.
Any upcoming dates are listed on the MGM page

I should clarify:

Re-doing the previously scheduled titles has caused other titles (like Hannibal) to be bumped because they needed to devote the resources to them.

Wicky thanks for the info... sounds like MGM is doing what WB is doing paying great attention to detail so we get good transfers on Blu-ray... That about sums it up right?

Many thanks...

It's good to read that MGM is taking pride in their work.

Thanks Wicky. Good to hear! As much as we might complain (and boy are we good at that) about waiting for MGM titles, we would complain more at quick and crappy releases with the double dipping factor in play for each title down the road with the quality BD requires.

Take your time MGM...

Wicky --

I hope that's the case. And I hope that one of those catalog titles is THIEF, which was one of their earliest releases on DVD and hasn't been remastered since and is in dire need (it's not even 16x9). A few years back, under the leadership of former MGM head Yamijian (sp?) they seemed to want to put out as much of the catalog as quickly as possible on DVD (to increase cashflow to the studio and market share)... and quality suffered on a lot of releases.

MGM do take pride in their work these days. The MR BROOKS BD is close to reference quality. And they have done stellar work on the BOND and Leone titles too, to mention just a few (on regular DVD that is).

I hear you on Thief, it's a great movie (all of Michael Mann's movies are great). Another MGM movie that I'm eagerly awaiting is To Live and Die in L.A. It also needs a ton of work done on it. The special edition DVD looked terrible.

Specifically, if we're talking about that entire '07-'08 MGM/UA catalog that was "indefinitely postponed" earlier, a quick Movie-site check of the '06-'07 MGM disk listings would suggest they may have just found out that the future of Blu-ray isn't going to be in MPEG-2.
(Which even Lionsgate figured out by now, duh.)

No coding listed for "Battle of Britain"'s return yet, is that Fox's, or MGM/UA's?

I hope they release Rollerball some time soon. The US DVD sucks (not anamorphic) and the European and Japanese edictions though anamorphic look dreadful with a master print in terrible condiction, plenty of grain (visible even on a DVD), marks and dirt.

It has nothing to do with MPEG-2, which is just fine so long as you give it room to breathe, and far faster to encode. It's completely appropriate to use it on slower, exposition filled titles for example.

Their master tapes were not restored. They need work before the titles can look good on blu-ray. It has nothing to do with the encodes

Sony owns a piece of MGM, Fox manages the PR and distribution, but MGM decides what MGM does

To Live And Die In L.A. is being released on May 2 in Japan. It's up for pre-order. Here's the cover art:
