But the trade off is that the upscaling of the PS3 is fantastic. So i can either use my ps2 and have sorround, or use my ps3 and have much clearer graphics. Its an easy call for me.
Actually you can, I have the same receiver as you and a PS3. Its not that the receiver will not apply sound matrixing just because its HDMI, its only when you have multi-channel PCM over HDMI, that the 910 will display "not used" when you press AFD. When you have 5.1 xxKHz checked off as a sound option in the PS3s option, the receiver will think that everything the PS3 is outputting is 5.1 PCM and will not let you apply surround matrixing to stereo sources like PS2 games, and of course music.

You have to go into the sound options and only select the audio that you will use. Most of the time I only have 3 boxes checked, DTS, Dolby Digital, and 5.1 48KHz. This works fine for all PS3 games and Blu-ray movies using 5.1 PCM. Now if I'm going to play music or PS2 games and I want surround sound, I go to sound options and uncheck 5.1 48KHz. Now the Blue light on your receiver will disappear and you can apply any of the sound matrixing to your stereo sources. Then if you want to go back and watch a Blu-ray with 5.1 PCM, go back into sound options and select 5.1 48KHz again.

This works fine for me, but I don't mind going to the sound options every now and then. Give it a try
