Default 1080i

Hi,so I have 56"RCA HDTV rear projection TV with highest supported resolution at 1080i through dvi input(does not have HDMI).
Question is:will a midle of the road BR player(maybe the samsung BD1400)give me a great picture inspite of the limited 1080i and the fact that I would have to use a HDMI to DVI cable.
Thanks

Even at 1080i the picture will be much better then standard def DVD.

If you have component inputs that will work as well for Blu-ray.

I would just use component -- sometimes those HDMI/DVI converts don't work so well I hear...

AZULEJO, I have a RCA HDTV rear projection that I bought back in 2002, also with just a DVI input. I bought the absolute cheapest HDMI cable and HDMI/DVI adaptor off of monoprice, $12 for both. Working great for me, and as your set is most likely quite similar, I would expect it to work fine for you too. And mine does support HDCP, even though it does not mention it anywhere in the manual.

For what its worth, my set is the RCA D52W20, 52 inch, paired up with my PS3.

HDMI-DVI Cable.

...adapters can cause handshake issues. Just get a cable.

I also have a HDTV rear projection that doesn't exceed pass 1080! But, my unit has a hdmi connetion. So, all that I have to do is connect my televion to the ps3 with the connector. Right?

Good point. At the time I bought it, It didn't even occur to me that there would be a one cable solution like that. Plus, the cable you linked is way cheaper.

HDMI = video + audio
DVI = video only

So DVI-HDMI cable should work fort you perfectly. You should get a very good picture with 1080i. Set the player to 1080i or Auto mode.

Thanks for the responses everybody,I'm going to get the HDMI-DVI cable,I wonder since HDMI carries both video and audio and DVI is only video,will I get the benefit of both video and audio with the oneDVI-HDMI cable.
Also, alan2308 I think we basically have the same TV,but what player are you hooking up to it.
THANKS

Never mind about the audio video question on the HDMI-DVI cable,I just read the specs @monoprice.com and it does carry video and audio even with the modification.

DVI specs do not include audio. It is video only but compatible with HDMI, so that HDMI-DVI cable can be made. Have you seen a solution to carry audio through a DVI connector?

I have almost the Exact set-up cables included with a Panasonic CRT Rear Projection HDTV. My Blu-ray picture via a PS3 looks excellent at 1080i. They say you cannot tell the differnce between 1080p and 1080i if you don't have a set over 50 inches. The thing that most seem to forget is that those older CRT rear projection HDTV have Excellent Black and White levels. Plasma has recently caught up in that area. I have seen some 1080p Blu-ray set-up displays at Best Buy and Circuit City that probably looks just a tad better than my set up at home. Hey if i am going to invest $2500 in a 1080p set it shouldn't look a tad better than my almost 7 year old set-up. I have most of the reference quality PQ wise Blu-rays and they all look fabulous on my CRT Rear Projection HDTV. I am always getting compliments on movie nights. 1080i is not a far cry from 1080p in my book.

syncguy, upon further review I guess not,the wording in the advertisement of the HDMI-DVI cable is confusing me,as best I understand, it says that the HDMI end it's doing it's part of the video-audio deal,but the DVI end can't possibly take care of audio.
The only solution for my problem here, would have to be going with the HDMI-DVI cable, and then connect red/white audio cables next to the DVI port on my TV.

I have a 2003 Sony 65in CRT TV and had bought an HDMI/DVI cable from newegg. It works great and even though it is only 1080i, I get black levels and color depths that I rarely see on a current set under the $2500 I originally paid for this 300 pound beast.

BTW DVI only supports Video.

This is an excellent deal for you. I have it and it works great. Overstock is pretty good, fast, and cheap. The monster cables are great quality too! By the way, component cables are nearly equivalent to HDMI cables on 1080i. The optical cable will get you 5.1 to 7.1 sound *7.1 with Dolby PLIIx*. If you can't use the optical, use the regular stereo outputs from the PS3.

Okay. Alternatively, you can use the tos link (optical audio) to carry 5.1 surround audio if you have an AVR with optical input.

Really. After all the effort to get a quality picture, it almost seems like a crime to settle for tv speakers for the audio.

Hey Everyone,

I'm thinking about purchasing another PS3 for my bedroom, however, is there still a problem with the whole 1080i with games? My CRT is only 1080i, so will i have problems with my games being downgraded to 480P. Did sony fix this yet?

Thanks.
