Yes i don't read very often but i do like reading a book when i know i like the film (or tv show) as this way i know what I'm getting into. I relate more to the visual media i would say
I have no problem reading any of the books. In fact I just finished reading The Hobbit again and am ready to start LOTR again.

Oh no... I went to his Wiki to spell his name right and didn't notice... Five years ago, and the book my folks bought me was published in 2011, so I guess that's why I thought he was still alive and kicking.

Tolkien just had a new book published a couple weeks ago too, and he's been gone for nearly 40 years. Amazing how that works...

Crighton's novels read like a modern day Jules Verne, except Verne is a lot harder to read - about the hardest read I've read, shy of Dante's poem trilogy. You could try Congo: The tech in it is pretty dated now, so it might be easier to grasp. Or maybe go for Eaters of the Dead, a viking story with no tech at all. I hear his last novel about pirates - published post-mortem - feels rather unfinished - which it likely is - or at least not up to people's high expectations, and probably not up to Crighton's either since he never turned it in.

And a HUGE thanks goes to Christopher for making that happen.

The tech is dated, so it's easier! Lol! I might just do that...

Have you tried any Asimov? Apparently the best hard sci-fi ever? WTF? I started the Foundation books, and had to give up, not from lack of understanding, but because the science simply made NO sense from a modern perspective.

Future societies, moving around the galaxy at FTL velocity, are fighting over one of the last remaining nuclear reactors because they all need it's energy? So... what are these FTL drives running on? Sand? I suppose I'm early man, and don't understand FTL tech just yet. Maybe the energy requirement is a lot less than the current theoretical papers describe? Give me a break...

And I don't understand everyone at all. Maybe they had trouble reading the books, but The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are children's books. Hence the reason most people (and I'm not dissing on you for not getting around to it earlier) read them in primary school, or early high school.

My parents bought me a Michael Chrichton book last Christmas. WAY above my reading level, and I do enjoy hard sci-fi. I just won third place in a hard sci-fi short story writing competition. I remember attempting Jurassic Park when I was eight... and I am really emphasizing "attempting"! That guy is way too smart to be writing fiction and needs to start writing scientific essays or something...
He is dead.

That's the thing about science fiction, even the science is mostly fiction. I think they've completely debunked the notion of getting dino dna out of amber too. But, it was a romantic notion for a while.

I assumed you were referring to the tech, as that's the only part of Crighton's writing that seemed like it might be hard to follow. His diction is very modern, straight-forward english, that isn't particularly stylish or poetic, except for Eaters of the Dead, which might take a bit of adjustment, but that one's more novella than novel; it's a short read and more akin to Tolkein's writing than Crighton's norm. Though the writing style of The Lord of the Rings is virtually unparalleled.

I liked the trailer and I know Cumberpatch is playing Smaug, so I guess the little dragon will actually talk in this one?

I seriously cannot wait for this movie. I think I may cry tears of joy when the trailer premieres.

Is there any movement on The Silmarillion becoming a movie?

I just recently spent the day watching The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings trilogy (Day well spent I'd say, 20hrs of nothing but Middle Earth and 4hrs sleep) and I just hope the hobbit trilogy isn't the last because I like the way Jackson puts these movies together

I haven't read The Silmarillion, just The Hobbit and Rings Trilogy, but I thought it, parts of it at least, were being incorporated into The Hobbit. I know it was reported that Jackson was drawing from other Tolkein works, not just The Hobbit novel; I assumed they were referring to The Silmarillion.

Most of the trailer looked promising with the exception of three scenes. The first was the bear scene quoted by Buddy, as there is no confrontation with bears (Beorn or otherwise in the story), although they are mentioned in a dream in a non-confrontational way.

The second is the scene with Azog - which is unfortunate - but Jackson is now stuck with seeing that thread through, having made it a major part of the first movie.

The third is as noted by Ernest Rister, as Smaug never saw Bilbo, and if he had, that part of the story would have ended quickly with Bilbo's death. The only reason he survived is because he was a mystery to Smaug.

But of course, we have come to expect odd twists such as these to the story. If it doesn't get too out of hand it will probably be OK. Let's hope for the best.

Bob. One thing that has me concerned is that Disney World barrel ride that we see in the trailer.

Just how many waterfalls do you think Jackson will have them go over???

I am guessing around five.

HA! We already know it's going to be ridiculous, consequently it will be easier to accept when we see it on the screen. An unexpected twist would be if there are only three or four death defying moments in the barrels by the time they get to Laketown, then everyone would be wondering, What happened... is that it?"

little? he aint little ... even the animated 1977 tv movie had actor Richard Boone ("Have Gun... Will Travel") voicing Smaug to excellent effect.

I thought I read and it was assumed that the Tolkien Estate pretty much has not allowed Peter Jackson anywhere near to what's in the Silmarillion and film it.
