Great link.

Bottom line, Microsoft needs to take a long, hard look at its gaming strategy - and, in fact, its entire H&E strategy. At what point, regardless of its virtually endless financial resources, does it say "enough is enough." Would we have been better served by returning the extra cash to shareholders rather than investing it in a franchise that seems to have questionable prospects for turning around? These are the kinds of questions Microsoft management should be asking. And hopefully, for shareholders' sakes, they are.

That explains Micro$oft's tendency to nickel and dime their customers so much. They are under pressure to turn a profit by any means necessary.

HD-DVD can die a horrible death. I have a PS3 and I am an avid gamer, but
I like my 360 way more than I like my PS3 as a gaming platform right now. That will probably change though once the PS3 has more titles. I'm always reading in these forums that content is key; I agree.

I'm not sure I see the PS3 selling 100 million unless it maintains at least a 7 year lifecycle but, and I've been saying this for a while, I have no doubt that in 2-3 years the PlayStation platform will, once again, have the largest, total, userbase of any of the next-gen consoles. It will remain 2nd to the Nintendo Wii in Japan, but 1st in NA and the PAL regions.

MS' headstart has been exposed for what it really was: a poorly planned, forceful push to release a console that wasn't ready, hardware wise, to withstand even normal use.

I think it was 1up who said it best in a "future predictions" piece some time ago when they wrote "in 2007 and beyond people will admit Sony was right about a lot of things." I think so too.

The one difference I see this time is the positioning from the PS2. While the PS2/DVD benefit existed - the PS2 was still just a game system for most people - I believe most still had a separate dvd for example.

This time around it's clearly being positioned as a single device to meet all of your multi-media needs - a much larger market than just gaming. For example on this site their are people that mainly use it a as blu-ray player, some that mainly use it as a gaming machine and some that do both. That first category wasn't really a market the first time around but this time it is..and with free online and curiosity getting the better of them .. maybe future gamers that otherwise wouldn't have existed to further expand the market and spread word.

I also believe you will see many more PS3 owners buying MULTIPLE units than would have occurred with a PS2 - again given the nature and positioning of the device. Something not obvious at first blush..living room and family den/home theater setups - there are a lot of homes with at least 2 setups.
And I think given the impressive quality and functionality of the PS3 most people wouldn't hesitate to purchase a second one if they have that need. I don't think the other consoles will have that kind of loyalty. My 2 cents.

And of those 110 million PS2 users - many are going to be looking for HD in the next few years..

This xmas is going to be interesting that's for sure

Including selling 'gamerpics' the very same avatars people download or make for free on PC.

I expect the PS3 to overtake the X360 before the decade ends (before 2010).

I don't care if it wins 1st or 2nd place against the Nintendo Wii. Heck, I won't complain if even Nintendo wins this gen.

All I care is for "WiiPS3" to dominate this gen. Screw all those who believe in that "Wii60" bullcrap (after MS downplayed the Wii two months ago).

The XBOX 360 can go down to last place and it should before year 2010

Stop being so conservative. The 360 should be in last place by CES 2009.
