Pedroia is a good player, but an extension at $14 mill a year lasting until he's 38 for a guy who is at best a .300 hitter with 15'ish HR a year is ridiculous.

http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/...inciple-source

Quote:
The Boston Red Sox and All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia have reached agreement on a seven-year contract worth around $100 million, according to a major league source. The deal is pending a physical, the source said.

The contract, according to the source, begins in 2015 and runs through 2021. It will pay Pedroia an average of around $14 million per season. Pedroia is currently playing on a six-year, $40.5 million contract that runs through 2014.

Pedroia, who will turn 30 on Aug. 17, will be 38 years old in the final year of this new deal. He is batting .308 with six homers, 57 RBIs and an .807 OPS this season.

The Red Sox first made a formal offer to Pedroia and his New York-based agents, Sam and Seth Levinson, over the All-Star break in New York, a major league source told ESPNBoston.com.

Last month, general manager Ben Cherington talked about the club's desire to extend Pedroia, who has played in all but one of the team's first 100 games this season despite tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb on Opening Day while sliding headfirst into first base against the Yankees -- with a six-run lead.

"Speaking generally about Dustin, he's certainly a guy we think very highly of, and he's a huge part of the organization, not just this team. He represents a lot of what we're all about," Cherington said.

"It's our sincere hope he's here for a long time; that's all I can say. We've got a good enough relationship with Dustin and his representatives that those conversations will happen over time. At the right time, we'll just have to see down the road what comes of it."

Yet only the A's and Red Sox can say they have a chance at perfection.

C'mon we are bad but it's baseball and any team can beat another.

Stupid contract for only a decent player, whats worse is this is the 4th contract handed out by the Red Sox of over $100M, none of the other 3 are still on the team, Ramirez, Gonzales & Crawford, you think they would learn

So are the Astros with the team we are putting on the field.

Seriously though, people can complain about our low payroll but it does make sense to put money into the team this year when they are far too many players away from competing. Give these young players some playing time and let them learn, then once they get better we can add the necessary free agents to contend.

Word is coming out that A Rod is facing the Pete Rose punishment a lifetime ban from MLB for using PEDS
Quote:

According to CBS Evening News’ Jim Axelrod, Alex Rodriguez could be facing a lifetime ban from MLB.

Ryan Braun was given a 65-game suspension on Monday for his involvement in the Biogenesis PED clinic and reports from ESPN have stated that the evidence against A-Rod is "far beyond" what Major League Baseball investigators had on the Brewers star. Rodriguez is presumably going to attempt to work out a deal with the commissioner's office, but if MLB has enough evidence it could look to push the 37-year-old third baseman out for good. There's much more to come.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that Alex Rodriguez has no intention of negotiating a settlement with Major League Baseball and would appeal any potential suspension.

A report earlier Tuesday from CBS Evening News’ Jim Axelrod said that A-Rod is looking to cut a deal with MLB, but Nightengale is hearing otherwise. Axelrod's report says that the third baseman could be looking at a possible lifetime ban from MLB. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported Monday that A-Rod's suspension is expected to be announced within the next 2-3 weeks.

I don't get how this works. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see people like A-Rod get the hammer brought down. I just don't get how these long, if not lifetime bans are possible under the labor agreement. I thought 50 games was first time offense and 100 for second time. I mean this isn't like the NFL where the commissioner has near dictatorial powers.

They're not going after Braun and A-Rod (and maybe the others) with just the Joint Drug Prevention Program which stipulates the 50/100/lifetime penalties. They are also claiming they made violations of the "Basic Agreement". My guess is that they are going after them for intentionally deceiving the league. Braun's was after his test failure, and ARod's has been numerous instances.

Press release on Braun's suspension:
Quote:
Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig announced today that Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun has been suspended without pay for the remainder of the 2013 Championship Season and Postseason for violations of the Basic Agreement and its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Braun is effective immediately.
Melky Cabrera's release:
Quote:
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Manny Ramirez's release:
Quote:
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that outfielder Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been suspended for 50 games for a violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Ramirez is effective immediately.

Perhaps it has to do with his lying and buying of evidence so that it could be disposed.

I hope you all are right. I'm just suspicious a draconian punishment like a lifetime ban would hold up in court. Of course the fact that Braun took a long suspension without appealing leads me to believe MLB really has a LOT on these guys.

And they allegedly have more on ARod than Braun. But yes, it would be in courts for a while. First it would go to an arbiter. And then I'm guessing Federal Court, looking to void the arbitration clause. Then Federal Court to try and essentially get the CBA tossed.
