Why are the "bad" teams all making trade deadline deals for players? Padres just got Ian Kennedy, which is nice... but wouldn't he have been cheaper in a few months?

Houston offloaded another player. I'm starting to think that franchise is intentionally trying to stink. This is likely to be the 3rd straight season the Astros are the worst team in baseball. They're 146-283 in those three seasons. And they can't justify it by claiming they're small market. Houston is one of the 5 largest metro areas in America.

I figured the Astros would start to spend some money when they got a new owner in late 2011, but this owner seems just as stingy and content with losing as their last owner. My guess is they're trying to go the Nationals route of constantly getting high picks and building the team that way, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to trade Bud Norris, who was their best pitcher and under team control for 2 more seasons.

It is going to take us a few years to be any good at all so it isn't worth it to hang on to any talented players or spend any money on free agents. Best to just let the young guys play, get the experience and be ready in a few years. Then we can (AND BETTER) spend like crazy to bring in talented free agents to complete the team. Norris is young and does have a team-favorable contract for the next 2 years but we are going to suck for those 2 years so I don't mind losing him as long as the prospects pan out.

I don't see the Rangers as a threat going forward. They are about to lose Nelson Cruz and Lance Berkman for the season. It will be a struggle for them to reach the wild card game. Not every bullpen is as bad as the Angels' bullpen.

Berkman has been irrelevant all season so losing him wouldn't hurt the team much, it'd probably be better for them. Losing Nelly on the other hand... That's a different story but there's still a chance he may not be suspended.
