PS3 audio output question

They seem to be wording it akwardly. I would call their technical support, because it does not say that it won't accept audio signals via hdmi, it just states that it won't output audio via hdmi. Which is kind of weird. Most of the time when they say passthrough they mean that it won't read the audio signal, not that it won't send to an external device.

From the manual:

"Audio signals input at the HDMI jack are not output from any speaker terminals but output from the connected video monitor. To enjoy the sound from speakers connected to the unit,
- make an analog or digital connection besides the HDMI connection
- mute the volume of the connected monitor"

Does that imply that it's simply a pass-through. Serisouly, like I said, I'm usually good with this stuff, but this one passage is throwing me for a huge loop. I can't quite get my head around all this audio stuff.
