I've posted this damned question on numerous boards, e-mail lists, and forum and no one will (can?) answer me. PLEASE HELP!
I do not have a Blu ray player yet. I want one badly, but until my burning question is answered, I'm not going to drop the cash. I think I've settled on the Sony HT-SS360 as an HDMI capable receiver. I have the DVD version of this bargain HTIB and I've been happy with it, but it doesn't have HDMI, nor does it have enough 5.1 inputs for another unit in my set-up. The HT-ss360 does not decode HD audio (TrueHD, DTS-HD) internally, so I want a player that can. I am of two minds at the moment. I really want a region free player, and the Momitsu BDP-799 looks like a good choice, but after reading the manual 900 times, I still can't figure out if the thing decodes those audio codecs so that my HTIB of choice will play them via HDMI or optical. Can anyone answer that question? I considered getting a decoding receiver, but they are twice as much, and I'm scrimping for the Sony as it is. If I can't get HD audio between the two units, I'm going to opt for a BD player that I know decodes the codecs. Those choices are between the Samsung BDP-3600 and the LG-390, mainly for the Netflix streaming and built-in wifi options (or included dongle in the case of the Samsung). If the Momitsu doesn't do what I want, can anyone give me an opinion between those two players? I really want to know about the Momitsu, before I lose my nerve and reallocate the savings to something less fun than a Blu ray player. HELP! |

I found this article on a couple of different sites:
http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/17462.cfm It says that the player internally decodes TrueHD but makes no mention of DTS-HD MA. In a review at DVDBeaver, they only mention bitstreaming. You would think, on a review site, they would mention whether or not the player included internal decoding. |
