Here's further proof that losing pays in MLB:

The Astros are on pace to rake in an estimated $99 million in operating income this season. That is nearly as much as the estimated operating income of the previous six World Series championship teams — combined.

Yet the Astros are 43-86, worst in the majors. Of the 270 Major League Baseball teams who have taken the field since 2005, none have finished with a worse winning percentage than Houston’s.

They have become so profitable thanks to slashed payroll expenses and soaring television revenues.

I read this earlier and find it hard to believe my team is making that much money. I don't know where the money is coming from because it certainly isn't from ticket sales and I doubt it is all from the shared revenue we get.

I'm sure from TV deals and welfare (luxury tax money). This has long been a dirty little secret with MLB. The Pirates have been pulling this crap for over a decade. They claim they're "small market" and cannot afford much in payroll (funny how the Steelers aren't called "small market"), then their financial documents were leaked and it was shown they were raking in big profits from stinking. This is exactly why MLB needs a payroll FLOOR far more than a salary cap.

Deadspin pointed out that the Astros aren't doing this to make money... they are using it to pay off debt so they can be financially solvent and then start working on a team within a budget they can afford.

It's important to note that the pitchforks and torches can be safely stowed away for now. This is not the Marlins or Pirates, with a skinflint owner content to keep costs down and rake in a profit. Jim Crane is delivering exactly what he promised when he bought the team in 2011—a few lost seasons as the Astros regain their financial and competitive footings. (Crane took on nearly $300 million in debt upon purchasing the club, including some inherited from the previous owner.)

TV contracts are not free money. CSN Houston, because of low ratings and major distributors not carrying it, is struggling mightily, and the Astros, as 45 percent owners of the channel, bear the brunt. With RSNs shifting the risk and the reward onto the teams themselves, the Astros have a concrete incentive to field a watchable team as soon as possible.

NEW YORK -- In a devastating blow to the New York Mets, right-hander Matt Harvey has been diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, general manager Sandy Alderson announced Monday.

Harvey will be placed on the disabled list and prescribed rest for now. Surgery has not been ruled out, the team said.


Matt Harvey has a partially torn UCL in his elbow, and likely won't pitch again this season.
If Harvey requires Tommy John surgery, he would miss most if not all of the 2014 season

The Astros are no long on Fox Sports Houston. They got together with the Rockets and created a new sports channel, Comcast Sports Houston. Which not many homes or bars in Houston have. It is not available on satellite. The local sports bar I go to had to go out and get a few cable boxes so they could show the games on a few TVs. This deal has cost the astros money.
