Hi and welcome!

Everyone will know which format is better when the Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended!) comes out.

The HD-DVD camp has two choices:

1. Try to squeeze a whole movie onto a disc (which will look horrible), or:
2. Multiple discs which means you will have to change discs in the middle of the movie...

Make sense? At least that is how I have been reading it all.
Not really because duplication in your meaning of the word should not enter your decision making process...it is the distrubutor's problem on how to get the product out quickly - i.e. build the process around it.

You should be concerned with the important stuff like best picture quality, best audio quality and content...

And welcome - now go get a BR player!

I made a post in the movie section - but I will ask something else here..

Is there a list that shows what movies will be coming to what format if they even come out?

I am not here to bash any format or company. I am just making a post.

I origionally backed HD-DVD for the sheer fact that it was NOT a SONY product. I have had some really bad experiences with Sony and quite frankly, I want nothing to do with them. So, I chose the HD-DVD format.

I also recently purchased Planet Earth - Pre-Ordered on HD-DVD. I only did this because I got a great deal on it that I could not pass up ($55.00 bux). However, I am no longer sure of things now.

I have seen both formats at play and they both look great. I chose the HD-DVD format because it was not a Sony product and it's cost effectiveness in regards to being similar to standard DVD's. Blue Ray on the other hand has a much higher capacity than HD-DVD. We all know bigger is better. My heat would not let me beleive in a Sony product tho.

As of now, I am split. 60% of me thinks the Sony product is better because of it's size. Again, more is better. 40% of me thinks HD-DVD is better because it's not a Sony product and its easier for duplication again since its based on SDVD's. Either way, I don't know anymore.

I hope that by the end of the year, there is a "winner" in this "war" so I don't have to waste money. The only HD dvd I have purchased was planet earth. I guess I am not in any camp. I hate having to pick sides and I don't beleive people should be doing "group buys" just to make the numbers look better.

Anyways, its good to read all the info and be able to make a choice. The problem is if your choice is the right one. For now I will stick with SDVD's and stay away from boxed sets until a "winner" is announced. Then again, there may be no winner and both formats may continue on until a NEW NEW format takes over. Who knows?

Anyways, thanks for listening!
i can see what happend to you but as you will see in my signature there is a enormous amount of company's that developed and support blu-ray. if u don`t like sony for your own personal experiences i feel bad for you becuase it has been roses for me but anyways pritty much unless you only buy toshiba players then your good to go but if you are going to buy a blu-ray player i would sugest to get a profile 1.1 player(ps3 is romourd to be updated to this profile) i think you will be able to get those player during november . and blu-ray isent just better becuase it has higher storage its better becuase it has higher bandwith!!! 48mbs 40 for video and 8 for audio .

Average price - HD-DVD - $38.00
- Blu-Ray - $29.00

This is the average on amazon anyway. Thought that might help.

I am a supporter for both HD and DB - and to tell you the truth I might end up getting Planet Earth on HD than DB because of the TrueHD 5.1 audio it has.

When a movie comes out on both formats I always get it on DB than HD... but I just can't seem to make up my mind on Planet Earth. I guess I'll make a choice at Best Buy tomorrow when I buy it. Unless someone can change my mind here... as long as it isn't the usual reply of "because DB is better".

Mod: NO IT DOESN'T It's the same 5.1 DD 448 Mb/s track for both. STOP spreading this FUD. See last 2 posts here

Do we even know for sure that it is TrueHD on the HD DVD version or is it a rumor? According to HDdigest, there is no TrueHD version.

Personally, I don't care to extend this format war any longer than is absolutely necessary. By buying the losing format's version, you (and of course others) are helping to extend it's lifespan. So, I guess it comes down to whether you are fighting for the good of everyone or just yourself. I hope that didn't sound harsh, but it's just the truth.

I bought not one but two hd dvd players....and both frooze up randomly during any given hd dvd title during playback of brand new untouched movies.
They both also would lock up completely as well as having random picture studder.
On both players, I was asked with version of the movie I wanted to view HD/SD....problem is that both times an sd dvd was in the player.
My players both had other random quirks, and did not even have basic funtion like play resume.

From what I have been hearing, there are quite a few owners of the latest versions that still have the random freeze up ect.
Quite a few people denied having playback problems on their first hd dvd players, then when the newer versions came out, they couldn't wait to unload them.

I have owned a Samsung BD player, Sony and Philips as well as the PS3...and never had random freeze ups or any of the other problems...and all these players were quicker to load as well as quicker to react to comands than the two hd dvd players.
None of them ever locked up either, and they all synced with my projector instantly...unlike both hd dvd players, which would lose sync every time I pushed stop or the menu buttons on those players.

This is info you will most likely not get at any hd dvd board....but I sold my 24movies...and took both players back...and ended up with zero respect for Toshiba after it was all said and done.

Lots of others have had this same experience with from 1-4 hd dvd players.
So the way I look at it BD movies are usually cheaper on the shelf than hd dvd movies are...and the players are actually worth the money as compared to my former hd dvd players.

Another little piece of info they don't like to talk about at hd dvd boards is that BD has around 90% studio support, and hd dvd has around 40%.

Hope this makes you a bit more informed on your decision.

Cost effectiveness? As long as SONY doesn't pass the costs on to me(consumer) I'm all for the higher capacity BLU-RAY format.

As time goes by there's gonna be higher and higher resolution TVs and I think Blu-Ray would keep up with the advancements in TV technology longer than HD-DVD due to capacity.

I read an article saying that 1440P TVs are already gonna be out by 2008. At that rate, we'll be at 1920P in about 5 years.

Mmm 1920p tv's and dvds. Now that is going to be eye popping goodness right there!

To some posters - I am not a big fan of Toshiba either. Never really like their products and I honestly will tak Sony over Crapshiba any day. I have dealt with their laptops and some of their other products and they seem cheap and not very durable to me. Along with their lack of tech support.

I think Blue Ray is going to win this one. Just too much facts and obvious things stand out that make it "better" than HD-DVD. Capacity is the major item and that is a big plus for future movies and technologies. HD-DVD would already be out dated right now because of its capacity.

Besides, blue is my favorite color I still am on the wall. Mainly because I hate throwing money away.

that's a little insane...considering not even 50% of TV channels are available in HD.....not even 1080i/720p...let alone 1080p...

I wish this were the case and pray one day I wake up and all my channels are broadcast in HD...

but I think that we'd have to upgrade cable boxes first...

also...if we started 1440p...HD-DVD would start looking even more inferior as pretty much an upgraded DVD player...

BD is the wave of the future for disc formats....until they come with a whole new format altogether....downloads maybe?...I'm not sure what they plan on doing after BD and I pray they don't talk about it yet...

these 2 sites show it has TrueHD Audio
http://www.dvdtown.com/moviedatabase...llection/20340
http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Earth-C...7386206&sr=8-1
on the second one check on the product details.

Really it didn't sound harse at all ... as I'm one of the few that is able to enjoy the movies that have not been released on DB. Frankly I am not disappointed on supporting both formats ... as I currently own 78 HD DVD and 121 Blu-Ray.

I guess if others sites say it, it's The Truth, but if Blu-ray.com says it, it's Not The Truth eh?
