I know there are plenty of games with PCM (all exclusives AFAIK)
None except for LAIR and Uncharted mention it on the box, and only a few have it in the option menu. I dont think the PS3 does internal decoding for games. For example, every time I play DMC4 it shows dolby digital. Therefore its not decoding. I think it defaults to whatever the highest setting you have the the Audio Options menu. It has nothing to do with the bitstream/PCM option thats in the BLURAY section. Is there really that much difference between PCM and Uncompressed PCM as far as games go? Since the PS3 (during gaming) doesnt decode, wouldnt that mean it would have to be uncompressed PCM? |

as an example: today i put in UT3, i leave everthing checked with pcm and i get multi channel. i unselect 5.1 and 7.1 pcm and get dd bitstreamed since its showing on my receiver. you would think you would have an option like bd movies since i have read some are using 2 ch pcm with optical because they dont have hdmi.

Like I said, I dont think the PS3 decodes during gameplay. It bitstreams the highest quality audio format you select in the Audio Options menu by default, unless theres a menu in the game that allows you to change that. Therefore, if it doesnt decode, then the PCM would have to be uncompressed, by definition. AFAIK of course. |

Well, my question is, if i LPCM sound to my reciever and it always shows Multichannel PCM, how can i ever really know if its playing a lossy track or not? Besides just listening to it. Games should definately have an audio selection like movies if they are using uncompressed sound...

All these posts and none has gotten to the core of the issue. Since this discussion is about lossless, let's take a movie soundtrack analogy.
In the studio, a movie soundtrack gets mixed by the sound mixer. Three basic elements make the soundtrack: dialog, sound effects (or foley sound) and music. The mixer combines all three together to make the final mix, varying levels depending on the situation of the mix. Once the final mix is approved by the director, the soundtrack is then compressed losslessly for digital presentation or Imax, or it is compressed into DD, DTS or SDDS to be printed along the 35mm copies. In a game, the PS3 is the mixer. The sound mixing module of the game assembles the dialogue, sound effects and music from its compressed files. Then depending on the setting, it will either send it out losslessly or compressed as DD/DTS. So if you already have a HDMI-based sound system, you're getting lossless sound. Why do some games default to DD/DTS? Ask the game studios why they don't program according to the PS3 audio setting. fuad |
