Separates have the following advantages:-
  • You can mix and match pre and power sections.
  • You don't get lumbered with a useless analogue internal tuner... you can buy a DAB separate tuner.
  • You can use technologies (such as valve amplification) which are not available in a receiver.
  • You can adopt monoblock power amplification.
  • There is additional shielding between the pre and the power stages.
  • The stack looks impressive.
  • If you go for valve amplification, you can dispense with central heating.
  • You have a sufficient wad to even think about separates!!!

... amongst others.

I'm going to be running paradigm speakers, monitor 9's or up. Thanks for all the info given already.
The Integra 9.8 received a favorable review from hometheaterhifi.com.

I'm running Pinnacle Aerogels for my mains, and I remember when these released they were compared over and over with the Paradigms. The Pinnacles are a very good match with my Emotiva amp, I'd expect the same on the 9's. I'd recommend Emotiva for anyone on a modest budget since they sell factory direct. Outlaw Audio also has a good rep for audiophile quality gear at factory direct prices. Parasound, Anthem, Sunfire, and Rotel are some other names that get a lot of talk before you get into the likes of Mcintosh, Krell, and Mark Levinson. It really depends on your budget.

Seperates will always be better, but the money and the hassle are huge things to think about, especially if you go tube.

I've been running separates for about 4-5yrs now and will never go back. I have the Integra DTC 9.8 (which replaced my Lexicon MC1 that I had to force myself to pull out of the rack ), 2 Parasound HCA2205 amplifiers into Paradigm Studios all around and an Earthquake unpowered sub (I use 2 channels from one of the Parasound amps to power the sub).

Spend some money on amplification - it will do your speakers good! The grip the Parasounds have on my speakers is one of the first things I noticed. The Parasounds are the core of my system imo.

Drawback - I have seen up to 10 amps being pulled at times so prepare yourself for higher electrical bills!

Why did you replace the Lexicon with the Integra?

I'm guessing he did it for the new audio formats.

Ha ha same here. Do you know of a good AV shop where I can check out some decent audio gear besides Century Stereo and SF Stereo? I've been toying with the idea of going with the Integra plus a multi-channel amp.

Century does have Integra, however the New Audible Difference in Palo Alto is a great store as well as Hermary's in San Carlos and Sound Perfection in Menlo Park. Don't like your 94?

As far as controllers go (pre/pro), there is still very limited choice available with the new lossless audio formats. I have been waiting since June last year for a decent pre/pro to replace my Meridian 568.2. No such luck so far. I will never go the receiver route as I have 2 stereo amps and 3 mono amps that give far greater flexibility/sound quality than a receiver.
