Hardly the same situation as Heath Ledger in The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. Fast and Furious is an established franchise, with a huge fanbase. You can't just switch out one of the most popular actors for another, it would be really disrespectful of his death.

It should also be pointed out that with The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, the story made it easier to have multiple actors play the lead, and it was his friends that replaced him in his honor, so it was quite respectful.

Universal Pictures
As reported yesterday, ‘Fast and Furious’ star Paul Walker died tragically in a car crash in California at the age of 40. Walker and his co-stars were taking a Thanksgiving break from filming ‘Fast and Furious 7,’ which was scheduled to resume shooting next week — but with the star’s life cut short, Universal, director James Wan, and the rest of the team behind the upcoming film face an unfortunate question: how will they proceed with production on the sequel? News has broken today that shooting on the film has been delayed, but ‘Fast and Furious 7′ is still very much happening.

THR reports that Walker and the rest of the ‘Fast and Furious 7′ crew had been scheduled to resume filming this coming Monday. When news of Walker’s tragic death broke, director James Wan and executives at Universal held an emergency conference call this morning to discuss a plan of action and whether rewrites will be necessary. The majority of the film has been shot already, including Walker’s role, but the crew was scheduled to fly to Abu Dhabi in January to shoot additional scenes. It’s unclear whether those scenes will be scrapped entirely or if his part in them will simply be written out.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters next July and has already been on a very tight schedule. Justin Lin, who helmed the previous ‘Fast and Furious’ films bowed out of ‘Fast and Furious 7′ due to the tight shooting schedule, and was replaced by Wan.

Universal has declined to comment on the status of ‘Fast and Furious 7′ or the future of the franchise, but we expect to know more in the coming weeks.

I think if they do a Fast 8, it should be a Dom and Letty story, and end the saga right there.

I actually wonder with this turn of events, if they could finish through with 9, and have Dom taking Sean under his wing and having him sort of take over for Brian. It could work, without disrespecting Walker and his character. Just a thought.

Then, stop the film to remember Walker and explain the remainder of the film was changed to reflect Walkers passing.

Its weird I know but I think the audience might appreciate it more in comparison to the usual "dedicated to our friend..." message that usually appears at the end of a film.

A short remembrance mid-movie wouldn't be in bad taste either.

Alternatively, do the remembrance at the beginning of the film and also explain parts of the movie were changed
LOL sounds like a Family Guy scene.

FF7 and FF8 will not be the end. FF7 will do tremendous business. J. Statham is in FF7 and they'll introduce another character to keep the series fresh for FF8.

The problem with that is that Lucas Black wasn't really well received at all, especially with that drawl he was working in Drift. There's a lot of haters of Tokyo Drift, I however like it a lot. BUT, none of that has to do with Black. I loved the setting of Tokyo, the introduction of Han, etc.

Maybe Black comes back and kills it in 7 and gets fan support and that would work. But I find it unlikely. He's just not a well liked character in the F and F universe.

I honestly wish (and recognize it would never happen) that the movies would scale back a bit, I like the idea of a slightly smaller movie with Dom and Letty. Trying to one up the set pieces over and over again is going to lead to problems. (even bigger than the 500 mile runway and a tank on a highway)

It's going to end up with Diesel just being even more of a superhero than he was in the last.

I think, as an actor, Lucas Black has gotten much better than he was before. More than that, I think the fact that 'Tokyo Drift' seems to have a place in the series makes the whole thing work even better. I think when the seventh comes out, he, and his character, will get a reevaluation from fans of the series, and he'll be accepted. This is just my theory of course, which could ultimately be wrong. We'll just have to wait and see.

I'd be into it and hope you're right. I've liked Black as an actor even when he ends up in campy stuff (Legion), so you're right. I'm excited that Drift will officially become canon, and perhaps that will make it more palatable to the TD haters.

I feel that for the 7th film they should have Brian O'Connor, Mia and the Baby go into super secret Protective Custody or something. At least give the film version of Paul a happy ending...
I'd rather they keep him "alive" in the films.

They are supposed to do a new trilogy with seven being the start of the new trilogy and Lucas black did sign up for 7, 8 & 9 last time I heard.

I REALLY think this franchise is getting out of hand, the last few films have been identikit flicks and offered very little. The seventh film will benefit from Statham but that's it, its starting to become an 'Expendables' rip off.

Another two films after that is utter madness, milking it to death.

One thing is for sure, Walker will be quickly forgotten believe you me, nothing is gonna stop this money machine, in fact having Walker's character get killed will probably do wonders for it. I'll bet the bigwigs are loving it I kid you not, real drama they can incorporate into the film to spice it up.

The Expendables wishes it was half as entertaining (or successful) as Fast Five and Fast 6

Fast 5 and 6 tried to hard to be the Expendables.. which EX and EX2 are much more entertaining and enjoyable for me.. I always found it laughable how in The fast and furious (the only one I liked and will own) they were just car boosters and in the sequel as well as the third and sort of the fourth.. than all of the sudden they are Bank heisters with Mission Impossible technology and smarts for 5 and 6 as well as special combat fighters .. I know its a popcorn movie but it was a little too ridiculous for my likings.. I would have preferred a reboot at that point I was in High School when the first came out and it was amazing! I'm noticing that cars like that aren't popular like they were 10 years ago, so it was a smarter move to draw in the newer audience of teens as well as giving the fans of the originals that grew up with them something fresh to keep them interested

The Expendables movies are crap. I dont think anyone would want to rip those movies off.

The Expendables movies are sad and disappointing. Seeing all of those half-dead, dried-up zombies stagger around, spouting off decades-old one liners is just embarrassing. Arnold looks like Frankenstein's Monster and Stallone seems to be wearing a melted Halloween mask of his own face. Watching them literally just stand still and fire guns, mowing down hundreds of faceless guys who bleed CGI blood is a far cry from their glory days. This franchise would have made sense as recently as the 90s but now?
