To my knowledge they're pretty much all the same these days..it used to be that there were a few spelling and continuity issues in both books, but they've all been corrected by now I'm pretty sure. There are some REALLY cool deluxe editions with illustration and annotations though, but for a first time buyer a simple mass market paperback set should be enough. Here's the deluxe edition I've had my eye on for a few weeks, just haven't pulled the trigger yet:

Many theaters are showing a Hobbit Part One and Two Marathon the same night. I think I might do that in 2D.

Trying to decide hether to see it in HFR, or IMAX (2D). I just saw the standard version last year, but I've been curious about HFR. I just don't know if I'll like it, and I likely won't pay to see it twice. Decisionsess

I'm thinking about just going 2D with this one, the 3D was just not that great despite all that hype.

The HFR and 3D for the hobbit made it so much more incredible of an experience for me and I am not really big on 3D. I would highly recommend it. I felt like I was in middle earth as the clarity was astounding

Don't bother with IMAX. Go watch it in HFR 3D. If there's a cinema that combos that with Dolby Atmos, even better.

If you care about the involving story and like movies see it in 2d . If you like gimmicky attempts to make you think you are getting something more and have lots of money to spare see it in 3d or hfr or Imax or whatever else they have these days.
Just my opinion. I will be there on Thursday the 12th of December at a 2D showing

8 minutes shorter than An Unexpected Journey. Philippa Boyens said that there was a possibility that the Desolation of Smaug would be shorter. She was right.

I'm a bit disappointed that AMC hasn't released any showtimes for Dolby Atmos HFR yet..really hope they haven't decided to not do that this year.

Is HFR the equivalent of watching the 240hz motion on modern HDTV's?

The "it feels like I'm standing next to the actor" look and feel?

Many people, including myself, prefer the 1991 edition with the Alan Lee paintings:

It seems to be the "standard text".

Smaug's head in full detail. Looks great -- just hope he has four legs.

In the interview, Ian McKellen says he never understands Jackson's plots:

http://www.today.com/entertainment/h...ies-2D11673672

I hope it's just light humor and not an indication that additional unexpected twists (e.g. the Azog revenge thread) are not headed our way for the final two installments.

Recommend the annotated version of the Hobbit, and second Bob's suggestion about the LotR book with Alan Lee drawings.Bit big and heavy, but you can pick up cheap a paperback of them for travel

Edit:If you buy them, and have seen the movies before, tell us how you like them compared to the movies since most of us have done it the other way around

He's referring to the manner in which the films were shot. He said similar things during LotR. When you're shooting scenes from film 2, then film 1, then film 3, etc., I'm sure it's hard to keep track.

Good, I seem to recall from the LotR special features that some of the actors found the out-of-sequence filming to be confusing. Lately I have been intrigued by the shots of Dol Guldur and what I assume is Dale in the latest trailer footage. I am hoping to receive the WETA Desolation of Smaug art book to get a pre-screening glimpse of some of the material, but unlike the first movie I haven't received it yet. Also, I was surprised to find a feature about Hobbit movie filming locations in the Man of Steel blu-ray special features.

Looks great! HFR for me. I was one of the few to like it that way. It was weird, but I thought it places it was stunning, like when they were reading the map by moonlight.
