At 29 years old? No way are his best years behind him. Only time will tell if this was a bad trade or not. I'm willing to bet last year was just an off year for Fielder because of his divorce.

Weight is not really a factor in baseball. Beltre limped all of last season from a bad hamstring and still managed to easily get doubles on a regular basis.

I certainly disagree with that statement. I do think his best years are behind him unless he sheds some weight.

Like I said, only time will tell. I certainly think that being in a left handed power hitters dream ballpark for most of the season will help.

Robinson Cano was spotted in Detroit today

Did Robinson Cano take a private jet to Detroit today? Tigers aren't talking

Boston Red Sox v New York Yankees
Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano is, easily, the best free agent on the market this offseason. (Rich Schultz / Getty Images)

Detroit — Say this much for the Tigers: They’re never boring.

Even when they might not be working on anything significant — and there certainly is nothing firm to suggest there’s anything to the rampant Robinson Cano-in-town rumors that took over Twitter on Friday — Dave Dombrowski and Co. still manage to be super intriguing.

Here, for the record, is what we know about the Cano rumblings: Not much.

Apparently, there was a post on Twitter early Friday that Cano — the New York Yankees second baseman who is universally considered the best free agent on the market — might have been spotted at under-the-radar Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti.

And just that little, unconfirmed nugget sent the Tigers fan base into a tizzy, wondering if Dombrowski, the Tigers president and general manager, would seriously consider ponying up $200 million or more just days after shedding most of the remaining $168 million on Prince Fielder’s contract in a stunning trade with the Rangers. That deal also happened to net the Tigers another All-Star second baseman, in Ian Kinsler.

Now, this might be just coincidence. There’s a good chance that it is.

But ...

There was, indeed, a charter plane that took off from Teterboro, N.J., about a half-hour outside New York City, at 6:59 a.m. Friday and landed at Willow Run 90 minutes later. The plane then sat at Willow Run until 2:04 p.m., when it headed back to Teterboro. The plane in question is a Kelso Air-owned business jet, a Bombardier Challenger 600, which seats between 14 and 18 passengers. This plane could cost as much as $4,100 per hour to charter, or more than $32,000 for this particular eight-plus-hour trip — impressive, to be sure, but not much of a dent for someone who made, say, $15 million in salary in 2013.

This jet also has made no other recent trips to Michigan. Its recent getaways include such locales as Augusta, Ga. (home of swanky Augusta National Golf Club); Bermuda; Sacramento, Calif.; San Diego; and Chicago.

There was no word from either airport on whether Cano had been on board. An employee in the administration office at Teterboro said even if he had that information, he couldn’t disclose it. There was no answer at Willow Run on Friday evening.

Now, how do we know Cano is even in the United States right now, and not home in the Dominican Republic? Truth be told, we don’t. However, there’s a reasonably good chance he has remained in New York for the time being. He is, after all, searching for a new contract. And just the other day, he did attend an A-list party in New York City.

Cano’s hip-hop agent, meanwhile, is Jay Z — who was in Oklahoma City on Thursday night, sitting courtside for an NBA game. (He also represents Thunder star Kevin Durant.) There was no direct flight listed from Oklahoma City to Willow Run. But Jay Z also is said to have his own private plane, and thus would have the ability to file a request with the FAA to be excluded from the publicly accessible flight-tracker websites.

So, what do the Tigers have to say about all this? Zip, per usual.

Asked to debunk the rumors that Cano was in Detroit on Friday, one official texted The News, “Don’t know his schedule.” A spokesman for the Tigers, when asked if Dombrowski and Cano did meet, officially provided a “no comment.”

Cano, 31, at least on the surface, doesn’t seem to be the perfect fit with the Tigers — who were thrilled to recently free up payroll flexibility, while acquiring a star second baseman. That said, the Tigers still do have to make up for lost offense — Fielder’s gone, and Jhonny Peralta and Omar Infante probably will be playing elsewhere, too — and they always seem to have a flair for the dramatic during hot-stove season, when their billionaire owner, Mike Ilitch, so often gets star-struck.

There are numerous theories how Cano could fit. One has Kinsler moving to third, and then Miguel Cabrera to first. Another has Kinsler moving to left field, which would allow them to take their time breaking in top prospect Nick Castellanos, or moving Castellanos back to third and Cabrera to first. Or the Tigers, theoretically, could trade Kinsler before he even plays one game with them. His no-trade power is limited.

During the 2013 season, there were rumblings Cano, the five-time All-Star, would be seeking the largest contract in baseball history, even in excess of $300 million. Nobody will bite on that, not even for a guy who over the last five years has averaged .314/.369/.530 with 28 homers and 103 RBIs. He also has won two Gold Gloves, and five Silver Sluggers, handed out to the best offensive player at each position.

For a more reasonable price, certainly, a number of teams will be interested in Cano’s services.

And the Tigers certainly could be among them. Or that could just be nothing more than another juicy rumor.

In any event, there’s never a dull moment, not with this team, and not this time of year.

Brian McCann is now a Yankee . 5 year 85 million dollar deal. Don't like this deal just because of the years. The short porch in right field would play well to McCann though. At least I won't have to suffer through the have-nots at catcher this year.

It's hard to find offensive catchers. Short porch in right = perfect for him since he is a pull hitter. I also heard he can play first. With three years left on Tex's contract he'll be younger than Tex three years from now and could move to first.

Also he can now DH and rest those legs. Of course anyone is injury prone and the Yankees might have overpaid, but we'll have to wait and see. I am not worried about years 1-3, but rather years 4,5 and potentially 6.

I don't know how much more than can spend considering they still need to re-sign Cano, persue Masahiro Tanaka, and maybe Shin-Soo Choo & Carlos Beltran. Also if A-Rod somehow plays next year he's due almost 30 million.

It's going to be interesting how the Yankees keep their payroll around the $189 million mark to avoid hefty luxury tax fees.

I'd offer Cano 5/150 and no more than 7/180.

For sure. Given he wants 310 million over ten years (or that's at least what his delusional mogul agent is brainwashing him with), I don't think there's anyway he signs for anything totalling less than 225 million.

Tigers may be close to signing Brian Wilson

Quote:

Lynn Henning of the Detroit News reports that the Tigers are involved in "serious" negotiations with free agent reliever Brian Wilson.

Wilson and his agent, Dan Lozano, met with new Tigers manager Brad Ausmus on Sunday, which is an indication that the two sides could be moving closer to a possible deal. The 31-year-old proved effective after making it back from Tommy John surgery this past season and has a lengthy track record of success out of the closer role. Joe Nathan and Grant Balfour have also been mentioned in connection with the Tigers this offseason, but it appears that Wilson is their top target.

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that the Twins have agreed to a deal with Ricky Nolasco.
No word yet on the financial terms. Nolasco, 30, posted a 3.70 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 165/46 K/BB ratio in 199 1/3 innings this year between the Marlins and Dodgers. The right-hander should maintain considerable fantasy value with Minnesota -- and may even get a slight boost -- because of the spacious dimensions at Target Field.

Rumors I heard was that Prince Fielder was a nuisance in the locker room because his children were always hanging around. Don't know if it's true, but heard from my sister who lives in the D. Also heard that Avisail Garcia was banging Prince's wife, but that's much less reliable. Anyway, in the long run, it was good trade for Detroit to shed that long contract, but in the short run, if they can't get another big bat behind Miggy, he won't be having MVP numbers. Martinez can hit but not for power, but he needs to hit one in the gap for a double and scoring position for Miggy is third base. Not nearly the threat that Prince was at his best. I think Prince will come back next year and do some damage, especially in better stadium for home runs. IF he can survive the Texas heat.

What really is more interesting is the Jhonny Peralta situation. Some argue he could play third base, but he was a below average 3B, while an average SS. He would be a crappy LF. A few things. While I know he was fairly popular in the D, he pretty much crapped on his team. He could have appealed his suspension, which would have diminished his value as free agent, but allowed him to play out the season. With his bat in the lineup, they might have had a bigger lead in the ALC and Cabrera might have been able to rest. They also would not have had to deal Avisail Garcia who was a great OF prospect and a huge loss for the future. DET has not much going for it in the OF right now. Why I talk about this, well, the talking heads on TV debate the ethics of PED's, punishments, remorse, apologies, etc. It doesn't change that he crapped on his team.

Now, I laugh at STL for the deal they gave him. If you knew his performance in 2013 was real, he would worth what they are paying for. What people fail to realized is that affects of PED's are chronic. You don't take a pill and hit home runs the next day. You have to use them and work out for weeks to months to get the benefits. And similarly, the affects take just as long to completely wear off. If Peralta was busted for evidence linking him to Biogenesis in the 2012 season, IN 2013, there is no reason to think he was not using up until the 2013 season and reaping the benefits through the postseason. Those benefits will wear off by 2014 season. Look at his past performance, he was outstanding in 2011, 2013, mediocre in 2010, 2012. Cards are going to get the mediocre Peralta.

End of my rant. Happy Thanksgiving.

Oh, I'm okay with Brian Wilson as a closer. He's a professional closer. Joe Nathan would be fine, too. Grant Balfour, also available, only has one pitch. Tigers still need a setup man, if they let Benoit go. I hope they are not counting on Rondon. He's just not getting it.

The biggest joke of the offseason was resigning Phil Coke.

Neither did we... its saves 6 million a year probably being used for this...

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers will give a two-year deal to Joe Nathan.

Exact terms aren't yet available. It's not often that you see a two-year deal for a 39-year-old closer, but Nathan has been in near-vintage form after making his way back from Tommy John surgery. He'll remain one of the top fantasy closers on a talented team in Detroit.

Being that the Yankees signed Ryan, I'm wondering if they are gonna try to go for Infante instead of Cano. I think it might be smart for them to let Cano go since they need pitching. I love Cano and will hate to see him leave. But I want my team to win this year.

Read this on another site and it's so true...

Detroit got out of Fielder contract
Anaheim wants out of Pujols contract
Dodgers want out from Kemp contract
Yanks give Ellsbury 7/153mil???

Will GM's ever learn?

(Ellsbury had 32 home runs in 2011. He has 13 in 880 at-bats since.)

I agree with sycro. Why are you comparing Ellsbury to power hitters? Having Gardner and Ellsbury at the top of the lineup is going to be turmoil for right handed pitchers.
