And if I were to take the next step up, i would need a receiver and speaker...correct?

For best audio the HDMI cable should be going out from your BD Player and into your receiver....then another HDMI goes from receiver to television.

If you don't have a receiver and speakers, then yes, the next best thing is to connect your BD player to your TV via HDMI. You're obviously going to be limited to what audio capabilities your TV has, but at least you have one cable going to the TV from the player.

And yes, the next step up is to invest in a decent HDMI-capable receiver and at least a 5.1 speaker set up. 7.1 if you can do it, though I'm more than happy with my 5.1 set up.

Are you saying that I would get better sound if i connected a receiver to my set.....even without speakers??

Also, my ps3 is in my room, which isn't too big....and I only have a little 20 inch LCD. Is it even worth going to 5.1??

Get new tv first, then other things.

Youll notice a difference in audio quality for sure.. but you need a bigger picture to fully enjoy movies

First off, let me say that i'm a college student, working part time at Blockbuster....I don't have too much money, so getting a new TV really isn't happening, at least for now.

So do you guys think that it's not worth making any audio upgrades with my TV??

Another option is to move my PS3 to the living room, and watch my blu-rays there. The TV is a little better, 32 inch, (both are LG).

best one would be the Yamaha mentioned around here for $350 or so... not sure the model, someone would know it.... other's will claim the onkyo 605 (had for about the same price in silver) would be the best.... either will work though.... start with one of those, and a pair of fronts, and a center speaker, and you'll be happy..... add cheap surrounds later, and eventually a surround. It can be done on a budget, and still sound good, and it can be done slowly as well...... Moving to the 32" t.v. would also be my suggestion.

PCM is technically 'lossless' audio since no data is discarded during compression, etc. That said you're only hearing a lossless 2-channel version of the audio, not the lossless 5.1/7.1 that you should be hearing.

Given what you have said, I would say move the PS3 to the living room.

I hear quite often people say "I have a small room so don't need 5.1/7.1", but I disagree on this. You don't need high wattage volume, but adding in a 5.1/7.1 system will give you directionality - things that are happening on the left will come from the left, etc. and just adding that element and speakers even if you are keeping the overall volume at the same levels will give you a much more immersive movie watching experience.

As for receiver models, I reccomend the Onkyo 605 as a good HDMI receiver.

Here's the problem....I watch the majority of my movies in my room, because access to the living room TV is somewhat limited. So basically, I could hook up the audio in the living room, but it would require me hauling my ps3 back and forth from upstairs to downstairs quite a bit. I guess it's not that big of an inconvenience.

I guess its the best option because if i put the sound system in my room, it would cause a big disturbance to my parents when they are sleeping.

Keep your room simple. Try not to disturb your parents.

So you could continue with your PS3 and 20" TV set in your room and take PS3 downstairs if you want to watch a movie on a larger screen with surround sound.

If you set up an AVR (with surround speakers) connected to downstairs TV with HDMI, it is easy to connect PS3 to this AVR very easily using another HDMI cable.
