Yeah the book as well as the film never says anything bad about spirituality or Christianity, it criticism the institution of orgainized foundamentalism. Doesn't matter whether it is here in the US or the Middle East, crazy foundamentists are bad.

I'd advise renting it. Folks I viewed it with in the theater didn't really liked it to the point of replay value or wanting to see any future movies released.

Buying movies IMHO is all about replay value which offers none at least to us with this one.

I love Golden Compass, amazing film, I can't wait for The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. And the slipcover is very beautifully designed, and what a great release; the entire second disc contains HD features.

Depends on if you're a fan of this type of genre. It's gotten mixed reviews, so I would also rent this one before purchasing myself.

Well...I got a chance to watch this on Friday....

since I had read the book prior to watching this, I came away quite dissappointed with this one....the flow of the movie itself felt soooo off compared to the natural flow of the book....it felt all crammed together...while the course of the book took many months from start to finish, the movie felt like it was a weekend trip....the flow!!! The flow was so off for me. Too many things in too short of a movie..they really needed someone with a greater vision doing this one. They gave up so much right in the very first narration, I was dumbfounded that they decided to take that course....ugh...

I was extremely critical about the movie...my wife and kids liked it, but they hadn't read the book first.

I will wait for the Golden Compass I am not a renter so i will not rent it but i have no problem waiting until it goes below $20....lately it seems if you wait a month or two the titles drop anywhere from 2-6 dollars so you can save a little money that way although it is hard to hold off on certain titles for that long

Not worth buying. It's a renter.

While enjoyable and worth seeing, it wasn't for me something I would watch repeatedly. Those kids with their mumbling got really annoying after awhile. I found the sound quality to be quite poor. Always either too quiet or way to loud.

Course I could be tainted by having read the book first.

Why buy something written by someone with a huge chip on their shoulder while writing it? I'd rent it first to make sure you really think it is worth watching over and over again. It doesn't come close to Narnia, the book or the new movies.

Felt like they were trying to do a mix of Narnia and LotR.
Still never got the definition of what there demons(How ever it was spelled) were. Story line was a bore, editing sucked. I'm going to get with my bro jwbbud to find out how to trade on here.

That is funny. If you are referring to the Christmas season. Push an anti religion movie for Xmas that makes sense.

Movie will not see the light of day in my house not even as a rental. It is sad that everytime I turn around someone is bashing the church. I would like to see Hollywood make a movie like this about the Muslim religion world was 3 would be declared.

Come on do a little research on the author. There is good reason to not like anything that the movie stands for.

Sure, if you're a Christian that doesn't respect the beliefs (or lack of) of others, then I suppose you're right. The reason extremist muslims are always so bent out of shape is that they (generally speaking) have zero tolerance for any belief or perspective other than their own. I was under the impression that Christians, while maintaining and expressing their beliefs, at least have that basic tolerance for others.

I'm not trying to cause a fight here, and I respect your beliefs, your right to them, and your decision based on your faith to not purchase a film adaptation based on a book written by an atheist. However, I'd hope that you agree to the fact that atheists have just as much right as anyone else to express themselves artistically (as do muslims for that matter). The topic of this thread is in regards to the quality of the movie in general and on Blu-ray, not the religious or anti-religious sentiments of the source material or even that of this adaptation. I believe there is a thread for that sort of discussion on here already.

Now, to answer the question at hand. I bought this one blind, watched it, and have never read the book. I found it to be less than great. Not a bad movie by any stretch, but stacked up against Narnia (doesn't even come close to LOTR or the last three HPs), Narnia wins hands down in my book. Still it's not terrible and I don't completely regret buying it, but I kinda wish I had rented it first. Picture and sound quality is great though.

I disagree. Golden Compass is way better than Narnia as far as the movies and the books go. Narnia is for itsy bitsy kiddies. Golden Compass on the other hand is dark and questions the way our society functions today.
