Default Any truth to this PS3 60 & 120g rumor?

I went to pick up THE Chronilces of Narnia blu-ray this morning at Walmart and the guy who got Narnia out of the box for me was asking me if i had a PS3 or a blu-ray player. When i told him I had a PS3 he said they were informed today in their weekly meeting that the PS3 40 g and 80 g are being phased out and that the 40 g was being replaced with a larger hard drive the a 60 g, and that the 80 g would now be 120 g model. He said that they were not given an exact date but wee told by this summer they would carry both the 60 and 120 g models and that SONY would be releaseing a press release later this week. Has anyone heard anything official about this? I get new blu-ray releases every Tuesday morning and talk to this guy all the time and he seems to know his stuff.

Having larger hard-drives does not ensure backwards compatibility. Just more space for downloadable content and media.

I don't think a random guy at Wal-Mart is going to have the latest scoop on console hardware.

It's possible we'll see some new SKUs coming down the pipeline at some point, but I doubt Sony wants to increase their costs for no gain, especially when the drives are user-upgradable anyhow.

Nothing wrong with the 40/80 setup right now, aside from the lack of backward compatibility on the 40GB (come on Sony, let's see some firmware for this so you can drag in the rest of the PS2 owners...).

What they need to do is up the capacity to around 250 gb. Every game now seems to have a minimum install of 2 or 3 gb (GT5P having a ridiculous 6 gb) so a 60 gb drive is going to fill up fairly quickly (I know because mines already down to about 10 gb).

Once PlayTV is launched you're going to need a lot more room if you're going to be recording TV on the PS3 too.

I don't think Sony is interested in using larger HDD's as much of a selling point. If they were then they would not have made it so absolutely painless and simple to upgrade the HDD yourself. I upgraded to 250 GB for only $79 and it took all of 10 minutes to have the PS3 back up and running. That was several months ago so it would probably be even cheaper now.

To me the big selling point between the 40 GB and 80 GB models is PS2 compatibility. They seriously need to provide that if they want to tap into the market pool of people that have a lot of PS2 games. That's a pretty big chunk of the market to miss out on. Right now I'm sure there are people with PS2's thinking that since the PS3 won't allow them to play their PS2 games, that they could be just as happy going with Xbox. That's what Sony needs to do something about.

Just check out the thread in this forum on upgrading your HDD. It has a complete how-to, lists compatible HDD's and everything. I got mine from Best Buy. Pretty much any SATA Notebook Drive will work, but best to get one off the compatible list to be sure.

Edit: It's stick'd right at the top of this forum, but here's the link -

Anyone hear rumors on whether the new sku of PS3's will be able to bitstream DTSMA or TruHD? vs how it currently runs these codecs.

It is probably only natural that there will be a larger hard drive in the new models. The price of hard drives are falling all the time, so the price is probably the same.

I want to update my PS3 with a 320 GB hard drive, because I can see that I will, in time, running out of space.

i doubt that sony is going to hang its hopes of selling more ps3 on the size of the hard drive.

I don't doubt that we'll probably see a 120gb or larger PS3 in the future, but bringing back the 60gb, even if internally it's the same as the current 40 or 80gb models, it just doesn't seem to be a good idea. It'll just cause even more confusion.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust some shmoze at Wally-World for tech info. Now if it was some guy in a buisness suit who had a nametag from Sony on it with an official title like VP or something like that... I would probably take his word.

No, but when people see that the 360 has up to a 50% bigger hard drive than the 80 gig PS3, that'll make them question how good the system is. Most people don't care too much, because the biggest selling Xbox at Target is the white 20 gig one.

Hard drives are getting cheaper, so this rumor is a possibility.

Sunday evening I went into my local wally world just to make sure they didn't pull a fast one, and actually put more blu-rays out other than the ones they have had for the past month. Here's what I was told.

The manager and I had a discusion: He said that coming June wal-mart will be putting out more 1080p televisions( Sanyo, Vizio, ...), and they will also be carrying 3 blu-ray players. The players will be in the price range of upper 200 dollars to 400 dollars i believe. In light of this information, he expects Wal-mart to completely pull HD DVD from it's shelves and start adding a larger catalog of blu-rays. Sounds legit.

I think it is entirely possible that Sony will begin releasing PS3's with larger hard-drives, as it fits their business plan for the playstation store. Plain and simple, customers with larger hard drives can buy more content from the store. It's in their best interest to increase the size of the hard drives, whether the consumer sees it as a selling point is irrelevant.

I also believe that is why they made it easy to install larger drives, because they felt eventually everyone would need over 200G to fully enjoy the system.
