Default new guy

Hey. I'm "the new guy"

I intend to stimulate the economy with this magical $600 check I have just received.

When I bought my TV, I made the guy throw in a floor model Samsung home theater system for free. Long story short: (1) it doesn't have enough HD inputs (2) it sounds like crap suddenly (3) it's going on ebay (buyer beware)

SOOOOO, the question is - what can I do to maximize the PS3's surround sound capabilities for $600? Dolby True HD? DTS HD? I assume that these are the best available codecs, and I prefer a 5.1 setup...but beyond that I'm clueless.

MY SET-UP
Samsung 50" DLP 1080p (model # HL-S5087W)
Samsung DVD recorder (model# DVD-R155)
Sony PlayStation3 (60gb)
Directv HD-DVR

basically I want to hook it all up to a receiver using HDMI. What gives me the best performance of blu-ray/PS3 for 600$ or less? (more like $550 + tax?)

Thanks in advance experts.

I'd put the funds from the Ebay Sale into the mix, and up your budget a little. but I'd buy a receiver (pass-through is o.k. since you have a PS3) and just start with two fronts, or the fronts/center. If you weren't happy with a crappy HTIB, another one probably won't knock your socks off.

Get a Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony, or other similar name receiver. Make sure it has HDMI. Look at my sig to see which one I have (Yamaha) and a link about it.
It works perfect for me and I got it on a big discount!
I suggest you look around. Save up and use the ebay sales as well to try to get a better set up.
Good Luck.

I hope you have a bunch of qualifying kids, earning you $300/head, because in truth, you will not be getting any better than HTIB crap for the $600 you are thinking about reinvesting.

Sorry to say, but $600 for everything isn't going to get you anything good. $600 for a receiver is a good start . . .

Since you have a PS3, the Samsung HT-AS720ST will work well for you and it is in your price range. This is what I have and it works great with the new audio formats (DTS-MA, Dolby True HD, etc.)

Welcome to the forum. you fared much better than the last "new guy", who asked the ecological effects of surround sound.

First of all welcome Now you don't have a lot of funds - I would do like the other poster said and combine the Ebay sale money with it. If you have $950 you can get into a Yamaha RX-V663 for $350 (6AVE), and a Athena LS system (this is a tower system with a center, sub, and bookshelf surrounds) from www.audioadvisor.com for 595.00 - here's a link to the sound system http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo...umber=ATKLS500

I would generally tell you to go around and listen, but with your budget - I can all but gurantee you - you will love this system over the Samsung HTIB.
