Default Would the PS3 plaback BD movies using component cables?

or is component and HDMI for games, while BD movie playback is strictly HDMI only?

Sony aren't restricting component playback of movies on their players so I suspect component will be fine.

It has nothing to do with the PS3. There is a part of the copyright protection structure that exists within both Blu-ray and HD-DVD that is called the Image Contraint Token. When a movie studio decides to enable the token, then output in HD quality is limited to the HDMI output. The component output will still work, but only at 540p resolution (still phenomenal).

If the ICT is not enabled, then full 1080i or 720p video may be output over component connections.

Final specs for the PS3 have not been released, but if they follow the standards of other Blu-ray and HD-DVD players, this is what you should expect - the studios decide.

At this time, I am unaware of a single studio saying that it will definitely enable the ICT.

great, thanks for the info. I hope they don't enable it since my HDTV is fairly new, and it only has component. Limiting HD movies to HDMI only would peeve off 3 quarters of the planet that bought HDTVs without HDMI(incliding me)

do you think ICT would be mentioned on the back of the boxes of the movies? my DVD player already does 480p, which isnt that specially, so i want full blown HD movies on my PS3. eventually i ill buy a new TV with HDMI and 1080p support, but that wont be for another year from now. i'm looking into a 45-50inch LCD with a super fast response rate.

Yes, according to the AACS agreement the studios must inform potential customers if a specific title uses ICT, so I expect to see it on the packaging.
