Default Dvd ripping for personal use (legal in UK from July)

Doesn't this make D2D irrelevant?

Irrelevant? Nope. Not even close in my book. There's a big difference between ripping something to keep it on local storage versus having cloud access to it that allows you to stream it or download it. They're two very different things.

I'm usually moving from place to place every few months for work, and in between I'm travelling a lot. It's not feasible to carry around hundreds of Blu-rays nor is is feasible to spend the time to rip every single one of them and carry around multiple hard drives. That's why digital copies, particularly UV, are extremely appealing to me. I can access them pretty much anywhere, on almost every device I own. And if I know I'm going to be without internet access for a bit, I can download a few ahead of time. It's extremely convenient. Is it my preferred method for watching them? Of course not. I'd much rather have the discs and my watch them in my home theater. But when that's not an option, digital copies are a great fallback. And with D2D, I can access a large portion of my physical media collection wherever I am without having to worry about the time to rip or the hard drive space required to store all of it.

There are other advantages too, like being able to share my collection with family and friends (and them being able to share theirs with me).

It's all about flexibility and options. As far as I'm concerned, the more options there are, the better.

I need to check but I think keeping these copies in cloud is also going to be an option. (Obviously not sharing though.)

But even then, if you're trying to store personally ripped copies in the cloud, you still run into significant issues such as the time it takes to upload them and the myriad of online storage space that will be required (especially for HD rips). With cloud based digital copies (UV, iTunes), I have access to them without having to rip, upload, or pay for significant amounts of cloud storage.

While there are certainly a few similarities, when you really get down to it, these are two very different things. There's a place for both, and one certainly doesn't make the other irrelevant across the board.

Fair enough. I was thinking too much from my point of view I guess. The only rips I would be interested in storing are tv shows I don't have on bluray that will probably never see a release on bluray or even digital HD for that matter. Namely hammer house of horror tv series and Worzel gummidge complete collection.

Gotcha.

But that's even more of a different situation than the question you posed in the first post about this making D2D irrelevant. TV shows aren't D2D eligible at this point, and even if they were, the titles you're referring to probably wouldn't be an option for it. Apples and oranges.

You mentioned downloading in your previous post. Does UV allow downloading now? I thought the CFF wasn't available yet.

CFF isn't available yet, but all of the major UV services (Vudu, Flixster, CinemaNow, Target Ticket, etc) allow you to your download movies and TV shows through their respective apps/programs. They've all allowed this for quite a while now. The downloaded file is proprietary, and can only be played back on the device you downloaded it to and through the service you downloaded it from, but you most certainly can download your UV titles. I download UV titles to my phone, tablet, and computer often (and sometimes to my PS3).

Like many things, availability and features may vary depending on one's location.

Cool, thanks for the explanation.
