Default Hd Receiver vs. Satelite Provider HD Receiver

EDIT: If you are clicking on this thread for the first time, it evolved into a very informative thread geared towards the absolute greenest of newbies in the HD world.

I wish I could change the title to indicate this. Something like, HDTV for green dummies or something like that.

end of edit.

I will be having my Dish Network HD Receiver installed next week to partner with my new Samsung 37 Inch 1080p LCD.

My question is this:

After I get a BD Player, will I ALSO need to change out my current Marantz 5.1 Receiver to an HD in order to get the HD quality audio?

OR, since my tv is already running thru my Marantz receiver to my speaker system, will that be HD quality?

Thank you so much for the generosity of your replies and for the help.

I am BRAND NEW and VERY GREEN with all of this.

depends on what Bluray player you get. Assuming your Marantz is an older model, you probably can still use Multichannel Analog, so you would need to buy a BD player that can internally decode.

it depends on which 5.1 receiver you have. if you dont have any hdmi slots then YES you do have to change your receiver to get HD audio.

audio or video? im assuming video. if you are running tv to receiver via component, YES, you are getting hd video but NOT full 1080p.

some notes:
-the receiver you are getting from dish is NOT an audio/visual receiver. it is a cable box.
-if you do not have an hdmi receiver, you are NOT getting HD audio (assuming you do not have analog connections).
-you CAN get 1080p video if you hook up your dish netword box to TV via HDMI and then use an optical cable to your receiver (if it has an optical in).
-a cheap receiver that alot of people have that will be just right for you is the onkyo 605. this a/v (audio/visual) receiver will give you hd audio and video.

Thank you all so much for answering my newbie questions. I will have more.

I have an inexpensive Insignia DVD player right now that states 4 HD Hi-Fi Stereo. I have had it for a while now and thought that it would play HD DVD's...but I just put in 3 HD DVD's and it will not recognize the discs.

This player is routed to the TV via my non-HD receiver....could this be the problem? OR, is this just not an HD DVD Player?

Thanks for the help as you can see I really need it!

correct. the only hd-dvd players are from TOSHIBA and the xbox 360 add-on (unless you count the combo players). your insignia is NOT an hd-dvd player.

be warned. LOTS AND LOTS of dvd players will say things like:
FULL HD!
PLAY DVDS IN HD!
HI DEF PLAYER!

none of those are HD-DVD players. they are all DVD players that upconvert to "simulate" HD quality.

Thank you so much. I will have more questions as time goes by.

I have pre-ordered the Samsung 1500. I have Dish Network service. I will be replacing the Marantz with the 605 as suggested. Just don't tell my husband.

jhodi

P.s. That would be "There are no dumb questions"....

How can I determine if my new samsung 37 inch LN550 series TV which is 1080p ACTUALLY displays and accepts a 1080p signal?

Thank you.

So, I have been reading so many threads and there are so many things to consider. It's crazy.

With my tv, and with the Blu-ray dvd player, routed thru my old reciever (forgetting about HD audio for a moment), will I be able to put in a Blu-ray disc and hit play and it all come out the way it is intended...in 1080p and all that jazz with out any upscaling or decoding codecs or having articial motion and all the other various discussions I have seen take place?

Can I just "set it and forget it"? hahahaha

also, using dish, not everything will display in 1080p. in fact, nothing will show in 1080p.

cable/satellite broadcasts in max 1080i (i believe). your tv will convert to 1080p but it is not "getting" the 1080 signal.

one trick, is to go into the tv settings and only set 1080i/p as available. turn "off" 480i/p, etc...

connect the bluray player directly to the TV.

Then set it, you will be good to go.

what model is your receiver. i am having doubts that you can pass 1080p from blu to receiver to tv using component.

like the other poster said, use an hdmi to tv for video then optical to receiver (does it have an optical in port?) for audio.

omg, i knew it wouldn't be that easy...hahhaha.

My receiver is a Marantz SR-66...it is about 10 years old.

I will upgrade to the 605, but was wondering untill then.

I like the answer to juts plug the DVD player straight into the TV.

I have the TV running thru the receiver for my speakers (Atlantic Technology 10 years old also), and the sound is decent altho I can't wait to upgrade.

Now, about the Dish stuff....do I need to change the setting on my TV whne watching Dish, and change it again when watching a Blu-ray disc?

(hey, at least I know how to spell Blu-ray disc!)

nope.

But you will probably have to switch between inputs on the TV.

But the Dish stuff won't come in as 1080P?

Will I notice a difference in picture quality between the Dish and the Blu-ray dvds?

I am tempted to bake you all some cookies I am so appreciative of the help.

your TV will accept 480i/p,720p,1080i,1080p...it will display @ 1080p. So no worries, Dish will be fine.

yes. But then again, not all Bluray movies look top notch...

i cant really find any specs on your receiver. do you have the manual still? how is the bluray player hooked up?

with a red/green/blue wire?

how is the receiver hooked to the TV? with a red/green/blue? with a red/white/yellow?

you will see a HUGE difference btw dish and a bluray.

your tv will output at 1080p but it wont "look" 1080p. think about standard digital tv... if dish is sending you a 480p signal, it isnt going to look "highdef".
