Standard procedure for pitchers to use pine tar to help them grip a ball. If the Sox didn't complain then no one should.

Isn't there a rule against it though? It' annoying how many rules MLB has that literally everyone just disregards. This is my favorite. Imagine how much quicker the games would go if umpires actually enforced this rule. Most people have no idea it exists.

8.04
When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.” The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher. The timing stops when the pitcher releases the ball.

The intent of this rule is to avoid unnecessary delays. The umpire shall insist that the catcher return the ball promptly to the pitcher, and that the pitcher take his position on the rubber promptly. Obvious delay by the pitcher should instantly be penalized by the umpire.

Just refer to what the Boston players said about the incident and you'll understand why it's not reinforced. It's early in the season still so we'll just have to see how it plays out.

I love Joe but he really reacted strange to the whole thing.

The Red Sox pitchers have done similar (last year to be exact in Toronto & it was either Lester or Buckholtz).

I like what Buckholtz and Ross said about the whole thing. It helps them control their hard pitches more avoiding the possibility of someone getting hurt.

Whatever Lester had in his glove in the World Series is interesting though.
