Question Hard-Boiled Bundled With Stranglehold

I posted this on the news item too... But isn't Hard Boiled owned by The Weinstein Company's imprint Dragon Dynasty? Aren't they releasing a 2 Disc DVD this year? So therefore, wouldn't Hard-Boiled, if released in High Def format, be an HD DVD exclusive? What's going on? This seems to good to be true... But OH MAN, if it's true... I will DIE with happy disease.

Well it's US$10 more so it could just be the DVD, which I think would be pointless. Licensing a DVD for a promo can be done if enough money is paid for it; the same can be true about a BD copy if it was only available as a whole game+movie package.

The USA Today article

Quote:
a PS3 collector's edition ($70) of the game will also include a full-length remastered high-def version of the 1992 film Hard Boiled, the Hong Kong action film starring the character.
That wouldn't be DVD (not high-def) or HD DVD (wouldn't work on a PS/3).

Gary

P.S. According to IMDB, Hard Boiled is released on DVD by Fox Lorber and Criterion

The $70 Collector's Edition for PS3 will be the only version to bundle the movie which will be Blu-ray.

The game is probably pure cheese, but the movie is pure win! The only worry is of course if the movie is cut or censored in any way, as HK movies haven't usually fared well when being released in the US.

I still don't understand the rights issues at play. I would think that if anyone had the rights to a Hi Def version it would be TWC, which is HDDVD only, right? This seems weird.

Weirdly enough, I don't think Hard Boiled has ever been released CENSORED in this country! It's one of the few HK films to fair well in this regard. All the versions I've seen here on VHS or DVD have been uncensored. (I know there's a Tawainese DVD of EXTREMELY crappy quality that has a longer cut, but I'm pretty sure that's not really an official cut.) A decent transfer, however, is another story. The OOP Criterion disc was an early release, and wasn't anamorphic. The Fox Lorber release afterwards wasn't much of an improvement. I have an HK import that looks good, but has some subtitle crap-outs. TWC being HDDVD only breaks my tiny heart, as there are HUNDREDS of asian films in their library I would love to see in hi def. Hurry up and DIE HD DVD. You're cramping my style.

The only potential drawback of this is, the game may very well suck. This game has been hyped up so much that it could very well suck like Spiderman3.
To include a great movie worth only 25, in my book, and to never play the game more than a few hours would be a total waste. I hope the game
does not suck, and I hope that the movie will be released individually after the special edition has been released.

I think we're lucky if it comes out with the game, frankly. If it does, I can't imagine how TWC would let it come out by itself on BD.

The old "movie game" trap. A legitimate concern although I've had my fingers crossed for this game since I first heard about it.

At least you would get a movie out of it though. Better than just a shitty game

Hard-Boiled might stink when the game comes out but I think Spidey 3 gets a bad rap. My son plays it a lot and loves it. It looks great and seems fun. I always hear that the controls are so difficult but he's 8 and never has an issue. I think people just expect a $60 game to do everything and give them head afterwards.

Tell me why it sucks.

Weinstein may not have gotten hi-def publishing rights, but just DVD ones.

Back to the game though, if you don't like it just take it to gamestop or something and trade it in for credit, or even ebay it. I'm weird enough that I'd pay $70 for the movie itself in HD (provided it's a good transfer etc), so the game is pretty much a bonus.
