Default Question on speaker "Pop" ?

Not exactly sure if this is a receiver issue, or a speaker issue, or a blu-ray issue, but here goes.

Every now and then when we are watching a blu-ray movie, I will get a loud "pop", from my surround speakers. It usually only does it one time somewhere during the movie. It almost seems like a "build-up" of electricity that "pops" out, and then it's ok after that.

I have a Yamaha 3800 receiver and a Panny DMP30 connected to a 7.1 speaker setup, plus two more "presence" speakers. I also have a Velodyne sub.

All my speakers are matched, Yamaha 6-ohm except for my two rear speakers which are Bose. I have the receiver set to 6-ohm.

Anyone else experience this, or know what might be causing it?

Thanks

Does it happen only when you listen to DTS HDMA tracks by any chance?

Hi Woody, I'm not sure, I don't usually pay attention to which type of sound track is on the Blu-Ray. I'll have to start keeping track to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks

I'm assuming you set up your speakers with the auto-calibration, so the crossovers should be correct. If not, do that. What model Bose speakers are your surrounds? I guess it's possible it could be your wiring. Reconnecting the wiring to your surrounds might be a good first step. Try to make sure there's no exposed wire that could come in contact with metal surfaces besides your binding posts. Or in the case of Bose, spring clips(yuck).

Kratos, did the auto-calibrate thing and I've double checked all the wiring. The only time it does this, is when we're watching a blu-ray movie. I've got an upconverting DVD player also, and it doesn't do it when watching a regular DVD, or while watching regular TV.

I guess it must be an issue with my Panny DMP30. It's just so weird though, because it makes this "pop" so rarely and randomly. When it does it though, it about knocks you out of your chair, but then it never does it again for the rest of the movie.

Ok. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the dynamic range and frequency response of the lossless audio on BD. It's possible that your speakers can't quite handle it. Bose speakers tend to have limited frequency response, especially in the upper range. Does it happen during peaks of on-screen action, or is it just a totally random event? I don't know. Just my best guess. If possible, try swapping out your rears to see if it does it with other speakers as well. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Or it could be the DTS bomb since you are using a Yamaha receiver.

It's a loud pop (like you described) that sounds like a gunshot. It happens on Blu-rays with a DTS-HD MA soundtrack. Now, because you're using a Blu-ray player that bitstreams the signal to the receiver, the receiver is doing all the decoding for the sound. This is where your pop comes into play. Onkyo, Integra and Yamaha receivers are the only ones known to do this, but some movies will have a pop in some parts. You will need a firmware update to fix this problem.

It'll give you the file you need and the directions.

Just wanted to say thanks for the heads-up on this. This sounds like exactly what is happening. Looks like it's time to upgrade the firmware.

Thanks again

I have heard the same pop through my set up as well. It only happens when I play a bluray. I hear the pop even on dolby digital soundtracks as well. I have a Sony 300 bluray play and an older Yamaha receiver. I have updated to the newest firmware as well.
