You can do the same thing with the Onkyo. The biggest differences between the two are the sound and the construction. Do a side by side comparison. Trust me you will pick the Onkyo. Also lift up the Pioneer and then the Onkyo. I can guarantee you the Onkyo will be heavier. Onkyo in my opinion are also more user friendly. There GUI is one of the best out there. The only negatives that I can think of is when you use the automatic speaker set up it is not always accurate. It is easy enough to set the speaker calibrations on your own. Also it is somewhat slow to detect a PCM or bitstream signal. If you use a standalone cd player set the output to PCM or the beginning of your track may be cut off. I personally have not owned a Pioneer for about five years. The last one that I owned was the VSX607S. With that one it was a hassle just to adjust the bass and treble. That is what lead me to Onkyo in the first place.

Well if you are using weight as a comparison and say that a heavy product has better parts, the Pioneer is almost 5 pounds heavier than the new Onkyo 606. I'm a little tempted to just pre-order the 606 at jr.com for $450 shipped, but am a little hesitant. The Pioneer 1018 just looks so much nicer imo. My roommate has the 605 with the onkyo HTiB and it doesn't sound all that great; I'm sure it's the speakers. I just got the Polk Monitor 70s and CS2 that I will be using, maybe I should pull his receiver into my room and see how it sounds with my speakers. Question though, the 70s average is at 130 watts, which was another plus on the Pioneer, will I notice much difference if I run at 110 watts?

I was not using weight to say that the Onkyo was better. I used it as an example of how much better the amplifier is designed. You can go to just about any website and see what kind of ratings that the 705 have received. Also the Pioneer may be rated at 130 watts per channel but are you really getting that much power? As the saying goes you get what you pay for. This is why you pay more for Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, etc. There power ratings are much more accurate than some of the less expensive Pioneer and Sony models. Don't get me wrong Pioneer's Elite and Sony's ES series are top notch and thus they are priced accordingly. Again there probably isn't anything wrong with that new Pioneer. But if I were spending my money I would not buy it.

Wow!

I love my 1014tx except for there being no hdmi!!!

I am definitely getting this. I just hope the power section is as beefy.
My 1014 is rated for 110x7. I tried 3 recievers before settling on it because my speakers are very innefficient. I sent back an HK rated for 80x5 , and a Sony ES before getting a pioneer.

If its anything like the 1014 it will hold its own in the power dept. I never got mine to trip, and I have it at ridiculous levels.

130/110 = less than 3/4ths of a decibel difference.

i was actually looking at this receiver also. I have a onkyo 605 now on some klipsch speakers and it sounds great. I was looking into getting a 805 for an upgrade and came across this receiver. I would have to see this receiver benchmarked, because I read an article in ht magazine about sony receivers claiming 110 watts per channel and when benched, they only putout 30 watts per channel. This is why I got a onkyo. marantz, onkyo, denon, harmon all putout around or one their speced power.

Well, at the time of the 1014tx ,the 10 series were basically rebadged elites from the year before. I would have to dig up the review, but I was particular impressed with the elite counterpart's 5 channel driven performance. If my memory serves me correctly it hit something like 70 watts+ x5 @20-20,000.
And a lot of these "100 watters" will drop down to as low as 30w under this test.

I can confirm after sending back a sony es, and a harman kardon "conservatively rated 80w" per channel because I kept over heating them, that the pio seemed to perform that well. The last "battle" scene in the matrix 2 just blasts all around and I delibertly cranked it with that and tried to get it to overheat.

But of course, I've heard that 1014 was the last one that was actually a rebadged elite. So knows if it will maintain the standards. All I know is my 110 watt per channel 1014 will hurt you in a mid sized room even with my 86db efficiency speakers!

I'm thinking if the 1018 doesnt get good feedback then I'll just shell out the extra for an 805. I have to upgrade because I'm selling my samsung 1400 for a ps3 and I will lose the analog outputs for lossless audio.

Does anyone have any problems being an early adopter of this model, or does Pioneer have a good track record on new releases for their AV products? I want the 1018 BAD but I'm hesitant about being the first in line when they come available... thoughts?

Pioneer has a good track record and the 1014, 1015, 1016 and 1017 have all been good receivers.

Excellent news. Perhaps I will join the list of early adopters. The specs on the 1018 make it (virtually) a no-brainer. I don't have money to burn like some folks, who apparently don't sneeze at dropping 2 or 3 large on an AV receiver every few years. Ouch...

I'm buying this and don't expect to replace it for at least a decade.

I've had 2 Pioneer receivers in the past 16 years... VSX-9700 (the first model with S-Video!) and my current one. The 1018 (hopefully) will last me another 5 to 6 at least.

ive been anticipating this for quite sometime, and finally has arrived.

Partsexpress has been quite concise with their estimates...

ETA June 10

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=250-532

Ive purchased a number of their receivers, and have great confidence with their products. Like every other company tho, sometimes the tale of the tape aint what it is, but then again, i like their quality and their build when it comes to receivers.

I'm getting ready to upgrade my current receiver. I was looking at either the Onkyo 705 or 805. However, I love Pioneer, and this looks like my new receiver
