The HD resolution is 1920 by 1080 pixels (16:9 or 1.78:1). The format of widescreen cinema movies often is 2.35:1. If you want to display the entire width of these movies on a 16:9 widescreen TV, some of the lower and upper part of the screen isn't used. That are the black bars you saw.
