There will be flashbacks during the game to help tell the story of the previous games. You could also play catch up by watching the Metal Gear retrospective videos from Game Trailers. I believe Shin-ra added a link to the first post of this thread. It is 4 episodes at about 20 min each that recap what happened in each Metal Gear, not just the solid series, and a little history on the games. At the time I watched it, a 5th episode was due out talking about the portable games that have nothing to do with the main Metal Gear story.
