The A's can make all the moves they want. As long as they platoon everybody, and don't have everyday players playing everyday they won't win squat. Samardzija has played for the Cubs, never been in a pennant race, and been on the most inconsequential team. He doesn't know pressure. Hammel is the same. If Oakland gets past the divisional round, they'll lose in five to Detroit. Platoons at every position might work for a 162 game season, but not in the playoffs. Totally different monster there.

Anyone else wish baseball experts, writers or someone else would pick the All-Star starters? I know it's supposed to be "for the fans" but with the system the way it is we get crap like a geriatric Derek Jeter starting. I mean really? The guy is on pace for 2 HR an 40 RBI's this season. It's just embarrassing.

Exactly! It's an exhibition game that is for the fans. He has been the face of baseball for a very long time and deserves his send off like Mo. Don't like it don't watch it.

Oh don't worry, I don't watch professional sports All-Star games as a rule. If they don't care about giving 100% why should I watch? But it's still an honor to get selected. I know he's on "your team" but would you feel the way if some Boston Red Sox player well past his prime and putting up terrible numbers managed was awarded a spot starting over much more talented players? This isn't an "old timers" game, it's supposed to be an All-Star game.

Sorry that's where you are wrong. If Ortiz was in his final year and was struggling, he still should be allowed to go to the AS game if the fans voted him in. The fans want to see Jeter one more last time in the AS game. Give them what they want.

The point isn't that he shouldn't go if voted in.... it's that he shouldn't be voted in. But the fans have made it a popularity contest, which is why the 4th most deserving NL catcher is the starter.

Why would a platoon work any less in the playoffs? Putting your best lineup out there is always the best practice.

Again it's an exhibition game for the fans. It's the point of an AS game. If the fans want to vote for Pete Rose to play 2B then so be it.

What MLB needs to do is get rid of the whole "the league who wins the AS game is the one who gets home field in the WS" crap. Leave the AS game as what it is. A exhibition game for the fans. I hope the next commissioner that replaces Bud Selig, gets rid of it.

While it is retarded yes its not a bad way to determine home field advantage. It does make the MLB AS game the only AS game with any meaning.

It's dumb. The are making a exhibition game have a effect on the WS. let it be done the right way. Let the team that has the better record between the two teams that get to the WS have home field.

Concept is good execution is retarded. When you have guys like Jeter and Ortiz making the team when they play like crap right now, and guys like Porcello pitching lights out and don't make the team at all. Thank god Tanaka is starting for the AL finally they got something right after the Puig fiasco last year.
