MGS4 IGN US REVIEW

10 Presentation
A story worthy of a feature length film, with action that keeps you engaged from the second you hit the start button 'til the final credits roll.

10 Graphics

Incredibly detailed and visually breathtaking, with amazing camera angles, MGS4 is one of the most beautiful titles ever made.

10 Sound
Haunting melodies, the re-introduction of classic themes via iPod, and perfect line delivery by actors -- this is an aural delight from start to finish.

10 Gameplay
Not only does MGS4 include new gameplay mechanics, it shatters the mold of what's expected from the series. Stealth, action, or balanced play: the choice is yours in how you explore this MGS world.

10 Lasting Appeal
There are dozens of secrets and Easter Eggs, along with tons of ways to approach any combat situation. Plus, when you're done with the single player, MGO will keep you engaged for weeks on end.

OVERALL-10/10

Closing Comments

Is it possible to give a game an 11? If so, this would be the game that would merit that score. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a title that exceeds all of the hype that was attached to the title. Regardless of whether you've seen every trailer and screenshot, read every preview and heard every interview, you won't get a full sense of how phenomenal this title is unless you sit down and experience it for yourself.

Legends die hard and deserve a heroic story that lives on when they are gone. Metal Gear Solid 4 is such an ending for the legendary warrior Solid Snake. Not only does it sum up the full franchise of Metal Gear, its depth and its complexity, coupled with its technical prowess, make it one of the best games of the year and, indeed, one of the best games ever made. Get some well earned rest, Snake. You've earned it. We salute you.

After playing for 6 hours, I totally agree with that 10/10. I am completely blown away. I have avoided all trailers/spoilers/gameplay videos so I was completely shocked at how this looks and plays. The mechanics and features are amazing.

And I'm really surprised, but they decided to go with 1080p.

I love the way this game sounds too. I'm so overwhelmed at this game right now so I'm going to bed and can't wait to continue in the morning.

Me too. I have never seen anything look as amazing as this game does. Just wow! I'm about 3 hours in and just a little ways into Act II. This game is going to seriously boost the PS3 into the stratosphere. M$ has to be worried right now.

This deserves every bit of the 10/10 rating!

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but just wanted to make the point that the game is not native 1080p. It is supports 1080p and it upscaled to the resolution. But yes, great game.

I didn't think it was 1080p, but I have all resolutions enabled and it is displaying as 1080p on my TV?

It is because the game supports 1080p and is being scaled to that resolution. The native resolution of the game is 1024x768.

I beat this today in 16 hours and 34 minutes, many hours (like 10) shorter then what I've seen on review websites talking about the game length. I didn't skip any cutscenes, etc. so I don't know what the deal is. Still a great game though, def going to play through it over and over again.

Just spent a couple hours on Solid Snake difficulty. Really fun stuff.

+ Graphics are great, though I still think Uncharted and Ratchet both edge it for environments.

+ Controls are rock solid and smooth.

+ The use of rumble on the Dual Shock 3 is a welcome and pleasant surprise, as it's both nicely contextual and not over-used.

+ Gameplay itself is brilliant, with the stealth mechanics working very well.

+ Amazing voice acting. Rivals the quality of Uncharted or Mass Effect.

- Storyline is, as typical for a MGS game, a bit fragmentary, but there's fanservice everywhere.

that's my highlight so far. it's a pleasure to play this game. it's finally used correctly. i'ts great , keeps you in the game so much more

for the environments i can see why , i mean, your talking about very colorful environments but from what' i've seen it looks stunning. Probably expect the same thing for killzone 2, very gray but looks amazing.

i didn't get to play more than an hour but you it feels EPIC. heh. i can't wait to play again

I agree with others.... game is 10/10. Sounds, graphics, story, awsome! Blows GTA4 out of the water.... the online isn't that good, and as others have said COD4 blows this one away in that respect, but as mentioned, MGS is not supposed to be a run and gun sort of game, so online isn't really what it was meant for... I see now why they needed to use all of the 50gb dual layer disc for this one!

I've been watching PS1 MGS1 clips on YouTube, and they've blown me away. It's like watching a good movie.

I got my MGS4 today, but I'm not in a hurry to test it out yet. I'm going to delve into the MGS world by watching some more YouTube videos all the way up to MGS3 before I'd play MGS4.

What I really need is to play the MGS Essentials Collection to fully appreciate MGS4, but I think I'll pass, for now. Maybe I'll just watch the videos now for the backstory, play MGS4, and then maybe buy the Essentials Collection last.

I simply don't have time to play so many games. I shouldn't even be watching these MGS backstories on YouTube to begin with. Trying to sneak in about an hour here and there M-F and maybe more on Saturday and Sunday.

From what I can see in watching the MGS1 serieis videos up to the point where Ocelot is torturing Snake with those electric shocks, MGS4 will be good.

I've never played MGS before, but I play GRAW2, Resistance, and COD's pretty stealthily, almost always prefering Sniper weapons.

If your time is limited, check out the Metal Gear Retrospective on GameTrailers.com. It'll give you the backstory without the necessity of playing through all of the previous games.

If you love sniper play in the above games, you're going to love Metal Gear Solid 4, as it gives you ways to literally hide in plain sight to set up shots (and quite often you can achieve goals without firing a single bullet if you so choose).
