Any chance after Thief of a Manhunter Criterion? Was just looking to finally get the blu ray and discovered it has zero features at all and a poor transfer.

It helps to think of Melville's Le Samouraï and Le Cercle Rouge as being aesthetically similar to The Big Sleep.

The narratives are presented in big broad brush strokes that miss over the little details, but the little details are not quite as important, because these movies are all about atmosphere and coolness.

Glad that many liked the film.
So, would Criterion be able to release that if it wanted?
I see it's Paramount/Miramax..

Yes. Seven Samurai is the one film that I would recommend for every Criterion fan. It's not quite my personal favorite in the Collection, but it's right up there on my list, and I think that it encapsulates everything that Criterion aims to preserve with their overall catalogue choices from cinema of past and present.

I'm so glad that I caught a 35mm theatrical showing of Seven Samurai earlier this year.

I see it's Paramount/Miramax..
Now that, I don't know. These licensing questions are definitely not my strong point.

Too complicated right now. Paramount has domestic rights, but they licensed most of their library to Warner. A Criterion release would involve a re-license, which is too much headache for a movie that has limited commercial appeal.

After all, it's a movie about
[Show spoiler]suicide

Paramount owns the North American rights; Miramax owns the rights in the rest of the world. If Paramount was willing to license it to Criterion, there's no reason why Criterion couldn't release it if they wanted to. There is precedent in Criterion releasing other Paramount-owned films: Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Nashville, and Rosemary's Baby, to name three.

It's amazing how faithful Huston is to the novel. It's all there with the exception of the famous one line Bogart adds.

My BN shopping list for November will be shorter than usual. Between the Best Buy sale (50% off plus 10% off coupon) and TCM sale (33% off plus 30% off coupon) I managed to get 6 of the titles that came out since the July sale. I was hoping to get All That Jazz and Vengeance is Mine but they were curiously excluded from both the Best Buy sale (the sale ended after these titles came out but they were not discounted) and the TCM sale (they are not even listed on the TCM site).

How many days until the BN sale? I've got 5 movies I wanna pick out and hope to do that the first day before some douchebag picks one of them up before me. :P

I second that request. I hope Manhunter gets a criterion release as well
Easily my favorite Mann film.

When and why did 3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg go out of print? Could a Blu Ray release be on the horizon? Seems unlikely since the films aren't in the best shape.

Just 5 weeks to go! That actually happened to me this July with Scanners. I was all jazzed up to watch it on the Friday evening after its release, but it was sold out. I just ordered it at the desk and asked the clerk to set aside a copy for me to pick up the following Friday.

Alright, so with my viewing of The Innocents just now, I can safely say that this may be the most unsettling movie I have ever seen. Massive kudos to Jack Clayton for not adding in any corny special effects to "heighten" the mood of the film.

[Show spoiler]That entire scene with Deborah Kerr as she is exploring the house near the end of the film is absolutely crazy.

Just noticed that today, although technically it's not out of print as it doesn't state so, i believe this has happened in the past for other titles and suddenly they are in stock directly from Criterion again (like Truffaut box set), so while it could mean a blu-ray upgrade it could also just be that they are out of them and are just waiting for the next batch to be delivered (i guess it would be clearer if they just put backordered, so not sure about that).

Anyway i just searched this forum and it appears this happened like 3 months ago.

Harakiri. One of the best films I have ever seen. Trust me on this one.

EDIT: Or am I misreading your post? "Already have" as in you already own these and list them to give someone an idea of what you like? Or is that your list to choose a third title from? Either way, I would still get Harakiri if you don't already have it.

I believe Criterion said they are changing the packaging.
