Picture format problems with DVDS on PS3 - Blu-ray Forum

Do you have a HDTV?

If you do check to see on the back of the DVD cases where the format is listed. If the DVD is not Enhanced for widescreen TV's than you get the smalle picture. I have the smame problem with a few of mine as well. This seems to be the problem I have. Befor I got an HDTV, I could change the format to make the picture look normal, but the new tv's don't do this. I can get the picture enlarged but it still does not look like it normally should.

I do have an HDTV. The picture enlarges when I change the upscale setting to "full," but as you said, the picture doesn't look normal. As someone also said, the reason must be that the DVDs are not enhanced for 16:9 TVs. I may start double-dipping then :/. Thanks for the help!

That is exactly the problem, and, although I thought one of the PS3s scaling modes was designed to handle this (not sure, though), the quality won't be nearly as good as DVD formatted for 16:9 sets.

Then again, just stop watching DVDs. Blu-rays don't have this problem.

I think it's called Double scale? if you change it to that mode it'll zoom in even more. Of course it has very little data to work with. My wife was quite peeved to discover we actually owned one of these discs!

i have mine set to Full not double scale but i just wish my anamorphic movies played in widescreen and tried everything i could think of

You have to use "Normal" for 4:3 coded DVDs, and then use the zoom function on the HDTV.
