They never said that. They merely said new flashbacks involving Thrain were in.

[Show spoiler]Unfortunately the giving of the map and key is not one of them apparently. Instead, there are two separate flashbacks to the battle of Azanulbizar - one at the start and another in Dol Guldur. In both Thrain is prominent

I'm not sure why everyone is so hung up on that flashback scene. It's not necessary, considering they've altered the timeline from the books so that Gandalf is in Dol Goldur while the Quest for Erebor is happening.

There's no real reason to see him get the Map and Key. It's explained away by Gandalf in the beginning of Smaug. "He came to see me before he disappeared." I think it was as simple as that, and based on what we saw in the trailer for the extended edition, it seems he might regret even giving the map and key to Gandalf.

Because we kept seeing Thrain in the early trailers and we just assumed that it was the map and key scenes. We knew Gandalf met Thrain in Dol Guldor in AUJ , but the scene got bumped to DOS and then cut from theatrical cut and we've been curious about those Thrain scenes since the first Hobbit teaser. Now most of us know that the Thrain scenes have nothing to do with the map and key but some of us havent yet heard that those scenes between him and gandalf arent actually about the map and key so thats why they keep calling them the map and key scenes. Its not really about the map and key so much as just wanting to see those Thrain scenes finally.

If Warners are still giving out review content in the US then perhaps some lucky reviewer for BRDC has it in his sweaty hands right at this very moment.
ahhhh, I saw quite a few bits on his webpage that had british pounds on it so I assumed he got it early cuz he was from the U.K. or something.... Warner is still sending out review copies in the U.S. but they hadn't started shipping them till this week according to my studio contacts.

Anyone else having issues with the Google Play/ YouTube WarnerVOD stream? I bought it at midnight and got "An Unexpected Journey: Extended Edition" playing instead.

Anyone have a *detailed* list of the extended scenes yet? Just checked TheOneRing.net, and nope. Nada, so far.

All I'll say is that this MIGHT be my 2nd favorite Middle Earth Saga film behind THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING EE. The additions, which come mostly early on with Beorn, the Prlogue, and Mirkwood greatly helps the pace in the first 3rd of the film.

Lake town has some slight extended bits (one particular character moment for Bilbo) that's okay.

But the crown jewel of this EE is Dol Goldur. This new version of Dol Goldur, which you do get to meet Thorin's father, is glorious. Just sad that this didn't the theatrical edition.

What this EE does is really put into context the greater politics of the quest of Erebor from the enemy's side and why Gandalf is responsible.

Not gonna lie, I find these two Hobbit films in their EE form more enjoyable than the whole of the RINGS trilogy, even while acknowledging that THE FELLOWSHIP EE is still the crown jewel of the Saga.

It comes back to Martin Freeman and McKellan's Gandalf the Grey. Their journey, their story with Thorin's I find more interesting than Frodo's and Aragorn's.

I liked the EE of Unexpected Journey more than the theatrical. The only EE I'm on the fence with versus the theatrical version is The Two Towers. It's no secret I'm not a fan of Desolation of Smaug, but I'm still going to check out the EE. I know it isn't going to fix the movie for me, but I'm still going to give it a shot.

The problems, for me, with SMAUG are still present in the EE and luckily, they didn't get extended. It's Laketown (which has a tad new tidbits) and the Smaug climax. They just linger on and on.

But everything else in this EE, I like a lot.

Is there anymore Tauriel in the extended version than what was already in the theatrical version?

Surprisingly, no.

I think the reason for this, as it's heavily implied in the appendices, is that they really didn't have a 2nd film at all. When they did the 10 weeks of pick up shooting, it was mainly to make THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG. It's the reason the Smaug climax is what it is. It wasn't present on the initial shooting of the HOBBIT films. I think she got fleshed out during those pick up shootings so I think that's why she didn't get extended in SMAUG.

It may happen in BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES.

Do the new/extended Laketown scenes answer the questions of where the dwarves got their new armor and why Bofur was under the table (hungover?) the morning the crew left for Erebor? I assumed there was a dinner party with the Master of Laketown.

Also in the Woodland Realm, where the dwarves are being held prisoners, do we catch any glimpses of the "Feast of Starlight" that Tauriel mentions to Kili?

No and no.

We do find out why the Darwes got back to Bard for help with Kili. Small scene that I think actually sets up Bard's ascension for BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES.

Thought it was pretty clear that they had some sort of celebration after
[Show spoiler]Thorin and the Master of Lake-Town created their alliance to share the wealth of the mountain
, and that Bofur (and some others) partied just a little too hard. I'd be surprised if some small scene showing that celebration wasn't included in the EE.

Damnit, you are really not helping in my decision to wait a few weeks for the Blu-ray release...

I would have bit on the iTunes if the 3D EE wasn't including a digital copy.
