I'm not sure why everyone is so hung up on that flashback scene. It's not necessary, considering they've altered the timeline from the books so that Gandalf is in Dol Goldur while the Quest for Erebor is happening.
There's no real reason to see him get the Map and Key. It's explained away by Gandalf in the beginning of Smaug. "He came to see me before he disappeared." I think it was as simple as that, and based on what we saw in the trailer for the extended edition, it seems he might regret even giving the map and key to Gandalf. |

ahhhh, I saw quite a few bits on his webpage that had british pounds on it so I assumed he got it early cuz he was from the U.K. or something.... Warner is still sending out review copies in the U.S. but they hadn't started shipping them till this week according to my studio contacts.

Lake town has some slight extended bits (one particular character moment for Bilbo) that's okay. But the crown jewel of this EE is Dol Goldur. This new version of Dol Goldur, which you do get to meet Thorin's father, is glorious. Just sad that this didn't the theatrical edition. What this EE does is really put into context the greater politics of the quest of Erebor from the enemy's side and why Gandalf is responsible. Not gonna lie, I find these two Hobbit films in their EE form more enjoyable than the whole of the RINGS trilogy, even while acknowledging that THE FELLOWSHIP EE is still the crown jewel of the Saga. It comes back to Martin Freeman and McKellan's Gandalf the Grey. Their journey, their story with Thorin's I find more interesting than Frodo's and Aragorn's. |

Is there anymore Tauriel in the extended version than what was already in the theatrical version?

I think the reason for this, as it's heavily implied in the appendices, is that they really didn't have a 2nd film at all. When they did the 10 weeks of pick up shooting, it was mainly to make THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG. It's the reason the Smaug climax is what it is. It wasn't present on the initial shooting of the HOBBIT films. I think she got fleshed out during those pick up shootings so I think that's why she didn't get extended in SMAUG. It may happen in BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES. |

Also in the Woodland Realm, where the dwarves are being held prisoners, do we catch any glimpses of the "Feast of Starlight" that Tauriel mentions to Kili? |

We do find out why the Darwes got back to Bard for help with Kili. Small scene that I think actually sets up Bard's ascension for BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES. |

[Show spoiler] , and that Bofur (and some others) partied just a little too hard. I'd be surprised if some small scene showing that celebration wasn't included in the EE.
