It certainly has some problems, but not the "Oh my god it's terrible" response everyone likes to throw around. I own the original solo release of the film and have no problem recommending it to anyone despite it's flaws. I could name quite a lengthy list of other titles with far more problems then this $5 title.
I never bought it because of all the negative reviews, not only from sites but also on forums. I don't think I can wait any longer to see the film again though, so I'll probably buy this release either way. If it is the same old transfer then it being decent as you say will be a nice surprise.

You mean the one that looks like it is a VHS tape?

I have the 4 pack (as its the only way to get 2/3 and Full Tilt Boogie) and it looks fine for a single film crammed with 3 others on a single disc.

It would be really great if Lionsgate utilized the International print for a restoration too.
Nothing is impossible, but I would say that's unlikely.

In 2011 I contacted Echo Bridge about BIOLLANTE, and the rep said a Blu-ray/DVD release was on hold because Miramax had nothing (their words) for that title. I don't if Miramax's materials for the old VHS and laser had been misplaced before or during their separation from Disney, but the word was the company had no elements at all to work with. At the rep's request I put her in touch with a friend at Toho's LA office, and an agreement was reached for Miramax to get a new HD transfer from Toho.

My role ended when I made the introductions between Echo Bridge and Toho so I don't have any details on what Lionsgate has in the works now. But the only way I could see them using the international version is if Miramax somehow found the lost materials and they were in usable condition. Otherwise, Lionsgate will have to go with the same transfer of the Japanese version that Miramax got from Toho in 2011-12.

For those curious, I just bought the Lionsgate Dracula 2000/Ascension double feature Blu-ray. The essentials is that both films have 2.0 DTS HD audio, neither have subtitles, Drac2000 has its OAR while the second feature does not, though I didn't find it as distracting as Echo's stand-alone Drac2000 ratio. Drac2000 has some special features while second feature has none. One odd thing of note: After the end credits for both films, the logo of Echo Bridge appears and not Lionsgate, despite it being a Lionsgate release. P.S. This Lionsgate release also appears to be Region Free per the back cover art, though tech specs on back cover is false for Drac2000, so who knows. Hope this helps for those that would like to know.
