You should be doing the Daily and Weekly Strikes. You should be grabbing bounties and leveling up your Vanguard level (or your specific faction level) to allow you to buy legendary (purple) gear. By doing all of this, you'll eventually level up your legendary gear (or at least your rare (blue) gear), which will raise your light level and thus raise your overall level. It's probably better to do the Weekly/Daily at level 20 first. You might get more rewards (I think) from those compared to the playlist. What is your rank with the Vanguard? How many marks do you have? You might be able to buy a piece of legendary gear. And just by playing the game, you'll eventually get purple engrams to drop.

So I buy the Armamentarium last week, yet this week, the stat roll on it is much better. Xur! Seriously.

Im sure you already know but you have to upgrade the actual equipment with the light on it to advance levels.

I've played over 130 hours since this game launched and I've only had 1 legendary engram drop the entire time. And I'm level 29.

You're going to have to buy some legendary armor and fully upgrade those to get anywhere past 20. You could get legendary items from rare engrams, but that's like playing the lottery. You'd do better at leveling up your Vanguard, Crucible or Faction reputation to at least Rank 2 so you can start buying gear.

I did the weekly but yeah I may need start another character. Should never have dismantled the sweet hunter gear I had. I have some decent stuff in storage for another character though.

i had no idea...all i knew was i needed light...i just picked up the game again yesterday after a couple weeks off becasue i couldn't get past 20...but not that little yellow bar below 20 is almost at end so i am close

This. Just remember, light is entirely in your armor. Your rare armor often gains light as you level it up. Then, dismantling it gives you more armor components (varies by Guardian type). It's nice to have high weapon damage, but the bonus you get from higher levels is more impactful in my opinion.

Focus on the armor and the weapons will come. Especially as you do the bounties and level up your Cryptarch.
