Anyone see this?!
http://www.thelocal.de/12847/ Apparently, all of the footage that was missing on the previous DVD release has at long last been uncovered! I hope that Kino will delay the release of Metropolis on Blu-ray long enough to reincorporate this footage. Thoughts? Here's the pertinent section for those anti-clickers out there... Lost scenes of 'Metropolis' discovered in Argentina Lost scenes from German-Austrian director Fritz Lang's legendary silent film "Metropolis" have been discovered in Argentina, German weekly newspaper Die Zeit reported on Wednesday. Paula Félix-Didier, head of film museum Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires, discovered an uncut version of the 1927 science fiction film when she looked into reports that a tape in the archive was unusually long. She travelled to Berlin with a copy of the film and met with experts who say they are certain it is the missing original-length version of Lang's masterpiece that reveals key plot scenes and an expansion of minor roles, Die Zeit said ahead of the publication of its Thursday edition. "The film's original rhythm will be re-established," Martin Koerber, the man responsible for the current restoration of the film, told the paper. Head of Berlin film museum Deutsche Kinemathek told the paper it was a "sensational discovery." In 1927, Fritz Lang presented the film in Berlin after producing it in the city's Babelsberg Studios. At that time it was the most expensive film ever produced in Germany, but it was not well received by its German audience. A radically shorter version was subsequently edited in the US, after which historians believed the original version to have been lost. According to Die Zeit's reconstruction of events, Buenos Aires film distributor Adolfo Z. Wilson brought a copy of the original version to Argentina in 1928. Film critic Peña Rodríguez later attained the film, which he sold in the 1960's to Argentina's national art fund. In 1992 copy then went to the Museo del Cine - where discoverer Félix-Didier took leadership this January. Last edited by Croweyes1121; 07-02-2008 at 09:43 PM. |

I think given how monumental this is, I think that they will push the release date of METROPOLIS back so that they can fully incorporate the lost footage so that for the first time since it premiered in 1925 that we can see the FULL version of this film.
Now if they could search those vaults again for Orson Welles' original cut of THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, then we'll REALLY be cooking. |

So, is this the whole "lost" extraneous subplot the earlier Kino version reproduced with stills, in which Joh's "Lurch" butler continues to stalk and psychologically torment the poor, fired office flunky, thus Allegorically Symbolizing the Corporate Oppression of the Proletariat?
(Or was there some either crucially essential footage lost?) ![]() |

I know you think the female robot is cool, but at the end of the day, it's just a stupid prewar-Germany pro-labor union propaganda piece. In pre-Nazi Berlin, that meant a lot more than that does now. And why do I get so upset? ![]() Because any minute now, some joker will say that Having the Big Real Thing with a Big Orchestra, 'N Stuff was better than the '84 Giorgio Moroder version, which had ten times more feeling by just stripping out the Teamster politics and turning it into a "love conquers all" Broadway musical. Purists may howl, but I've tested the two back to back, and know whereof I speak. (Sorry I can't go out and post Netflix links, since Moroder lost the indie rights years ago and the only known 80's VHS pressing will fetch $300 on eBay, but you'll either have to trust me on this or start whispering around for bootleg sources.) |

I know it's the same film, but does Kino still own the rights to this lost footage? The only reason I ask is because different studios often release the same movie in the US and overseas. Not to mention situations where ownership is different for a theatrical and director's cut.

True enough. Someone has a laserdisc copy of the TCM 75th Anniversary remaster on Ebay right now. I'm debating it, but I keep thinking that a new release has to be coming in the next few years. But, I've been saying that for far too long.

We've just officially confirmed with Kino that the new special edition Blu-ray and DVD (due sometime in 2009) WILL include the newly-discovered footage. We've been getting hundreds of people asking about this via e-mail, so know you all know...
