I just don't trust I'll receive replacements. I'd like for others to be the guinea pigs first. Once I hear confirmation that a single person received a replacement disc, then I'll mail them in.

Oh for heaven's sake...

Yes, Criterion is going to just accept all these discs people are sending in and not ever send replacements, yup, totally what they're going to do. Totally what a company that wants to continue operating and maintain its customer base would do. Yup, a totally reasonable fear, not at all overreacting, not at all a ridiculous statement rooted either in trolling or unfounded paranoia.

They ignored us for years about certain titles, and they ignored all e-mails about Summer Hours for at least a month before this thread kicked the hornets' nest.

They ignored one small thread on criterionforum.org with less than a page or so of posts and an even smaller thread with half-a-page of posts on this forum, which is ALL there was until September 2014, and replaced discs as necessary for those who asked. There was no indication that it was a widespread problem, just a bad disc here and there, and they acted in kind. It only was recognized as a widespread problem, by both Criterion AND, very importantly, the Blu-ray community, in the last two months.

They waited a week or so from when it became obvious there was a serious problem, and they did this so they could get their ducks in a row and issue a formal, organized response that would address most people's questions. Hell, they even figured out how to repress OOP titles in this period, so clearly they were working things out.

Both aspects of the situation were perfectly reasonable, and Criterion has been nothing but reasonable. I'm sorry their response was not as instantaneous as you would have liked, but all signs, both for the current issue and for how they've handled all issues in the past, point to a positive resolution. Using a delay in their communication to start spinning crazy conspiracy theories is simply uncalled for, and it will not go unchallenged.

No one used the word "conspiracy". All people wanted was a "We're looking into this." e-mail. They didn't even get that courtesy.

The ridiculous post by jw007 a few above, the one I was responding to, did imply a conspiracy. And if you are saying that jw007's concerns are valid, then you too are implying a conspiracy.

People should be very happy with Criterion's response - they have formally acknowledged the problem, have offered free replacements, and have even worked out the OOP issue that many feared would be out of their hands. To continue whining about the small delay in communication, especially after-the-fact where it is entirely clear they were using that time to get organized (not to mention simultaneously dealing with the Eraserhead issue), is petty.

Criterion has 20 years worth of credibility and good customer service. To flip out and assume they're going to screw you over because they didn't respond to your email quickly enough is reactionary and paranoid. jscoggins, you've handled this thread well, so I don't mean to put this on your shoulders - but please recognize that I was responding to jw007, and that there needs to be a clear distinction that views such as his do not match the reality of the situation.

You seem to read too much into my postings... maybe you should have taken it with a grain of salt. I wasn't being serious! Chill out man. I know very well Criterion is as professional as it gets for customer service.

I want to add to my "ridiculous post" that I'm feeling rather lazy right now so I just haven't "gotten around to mailing in my discs". Go ahead, sue me.

...and I would rather not send my discs overseas until it is confirmed that foreign customers will get replaced discs as well. While I don't doubt they will, there may still be some issues regarding this (shipping outside region, shipping costs, etc).

They can put a copy of "Criterion Designs" in my outgoing package.

I am sure as long as they have disc stock they will honor it. I also sent in my discs Carlos because I bought it the day it was released and asked if they could please send the corrected disc.

I had sent in my Carlos disc 2 and L'Eclisse DVD 1 with Summer Hours early this week. I got replacements for the first two in the mail today (second printing for both) but no Summer Hours. I guess the replacement discs are not available yet for any of the titles affected by the bronzing issue.

Thanks. Now we know, they're still working on this issue but can send replacements for other problematic discs.

There was a quote from Jon on the criterion forum board a few days ago. He said replacements would arrive to them in 2 weeks and then they would start filling them.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned in this thread or not...

But you can add the Scorsese/Rolling Stones Concert film "Shine A Light" to the list...

Got a copy from Netflix, wouldn't load... Took it out... Sure enough, the bronzing was there...

Reported the problem & requested a replacement... Sure enough the replacement had it to.

Reported the problem with that one & requested another replacement... And they sent me back the first disc again(had a noticable mark on the top side of disc).

So how exactly does one go about explaining this issue to Netflix, and telling them they need to replace all their discs Countrywide???? lol

UGH

Did you take pictures or check the IFPI numbers by any chance?

Regarding, Rolling Stones: Shine A Light
IFPI L897 (both layers), Mould IFPI 21D4? hard to read as it's stamped on a raised ring very close to the disc art.

Looking through my disc now. So far it's working, but it's obviously starting to bronze.
