Looney Tunes are HD, other stuff is SD

Quote:
I'm also a bit curious. Is there a reason that the mono track isn't in lossless? Besides the fact that it's a Warner release that is. Would it make much of a difference on a mono track?
Because the HD DVD wasn't lossless. Seriously, Robin Hood is so low fidelity as it is, you could throw 192/48 PCM at it and it still probably wouldn't sound appreciably better. I saw a print last year, and this actually sounds better than it did

Whether or not it's mono isn't the issue, it's the quality of the source.

Even though I already own the DVD (which I don't watch too often, since they show it on TCM so much,) I will definitely pick this up to see how it looks.

(And speaking as one who could recite "Rabbit Hood" from memory since childhood, it's almost worth the purchase alone.)

Why is this 1.33 ? The correct ratio is 1.37, I thought that with Blu-Ray, you can window box any format you want be it 1.66 or 1.55, it would not make a difference technically, but it would for the viewer who want the full frame.

Well the short included in March Of The Penguins was 1.37. And so seems to be the Rabbit Hood short, from the picture I have of it. They are 1080 x 1480, just 5 pixels short of the exact 0.600" x 0.825" dimensions ratio (Which is actually 1.375). Hopefully the Robin Hood movie will be too?

Josh news posts says 1.37: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1472

Every cartoon on the Golden Collections has been restored from the negative in HD.

All the cartoons and the movie are pillarboxed 1.33:1-ish, proper aspect ratio.

I actually bought both these films on DVD the same day!
Forbidden Planet I owned on laserdisc already,so I knew how well I enjoyed that film, but I'd never seen the Errol Flynn Robin Hood before.I was completely blown away....LOVED it!(SO much better than the Kevin Costner film!)

Classic movie, I'm a big fan of Errol Flynn (we share the same B-Day, different year). I would also love to see Capatin Blood, The Sea Hawk, Charge, The Light Brigade and Don Juan.

Good. Never bought the HD-DVD so this one will be a buy, even if I hear the encoding is a bit low.

The movie is from 1938 and you can even say "the encoding is a bit low" with a straight face?
Seriously?

What, old movies need less bits? Not if you want the image equally sharp and the grain resolved.

The only advantage is that Academy 1.37 movies would take only 77% of the screen and are watched at the same magnifcation as standard widescreen ones because they have about the same pixel height (1080) so maybe they can get by with 20% less bitrate than 1080 x 1920 movies.

I have spoken in the past that I feel it's DVDBeaver duty to encourage and support classic films looking the best they can for home theatre usage. Well, this is it. The Adventures of Robin Hood can look ridiculously strong even discounting its age. It's so beautiful to watch and this Blu-ray is the definitive way to view it in your home. Absolutely recommended.
Will be picking this one up asap.

From that image the aspect ratio is 1.366, not 1.33 as stated there.

Default The Adventures of Robin Hood

Anyone else excited to get this tomorrow? This movie was one of my favorites when I was a kid, I really wish they would have been able to get a better audio mix but they can only work with what they have, but I'm excited to see how the color comes out.

From what I remember, and I could be wrong, but it was one of the first Technicolor movies, made in 1938.
