I was super excited for Captain Marvel and enjoyed it a lot, and still do. I barely cared that The Marvels was coming out though. I've been lenient on the MCU's flaws post-Endgame as they still do have some great content, but it's all basically become a bland Saturday morning cartoon show with a rotating cast of super heroes battling the generic villain of the week.

And why pay to go see that when you can simply wait a few months and watch it on D+
to be fair, we are the minority in that regard, with many/most of us having great home theater setups. The average consumer goes to the theater to see something on the big screen, for the spectacle. I have a 135" movie screen in my house, but most people don't. So they go to the theater for big action films.

I'm one of the few people who actually liked the way Larson played the main character. I really liked Captain Marvel when it first came out and in isolation I would still feel the same way. But it was basically the start of what the MCU would become so I don't feel the same way any more.

Disney tried to play the game but even they have publicly given up on this movie. It had too many things going against it. A main character who was supposed to be the future of the MCU, but who a lot of people disliked both on and off screen. Supporting characters most people hadn't heard of or care about, and a series of poor to mediocre movies preceding it that killed off any remaining anticipation. All this before we even talk about the movie itself with easily the worst villain in the MCU. Put all that together and you end up with the worst MCU opening, worst second week dropping, tied lowest scoring movie in the MCU.

other than the incels out to bash the film a year before it came out, I think the issue was it was a film that had no meaningful plot that was known, and no stakes. Captain Marvel hadn't been in anything since End Game, and Monica was only in a show for a second. And Ms. Marvel the show, sucked, IMO. It always seems like a one-off and they never had anything in the one trailer they kept showing for a year that made it seem like it linked to any plot people cared about. Ant Man 3 sucked, but at least it had entirely established existing characters. But it sucked because again, it was a bottle episode. Plus the CGI.

GOTG3 was amazing but it's an outlier since it is kinda its own thing that people already love.

I liked The Marvels as a fun diversion with very good 3D. I probably won't rush to watch it again though.

Disney "had" three of the biggest franchises of all time. Each one took decades to become iconic. Disney bought them and in less than a decade, each one has become financially ruined. As Film Threat's Chris Gore pointed out, "Hollywood turning boy brands into girl brands will be the most costly and disastrous decision they ever made in their history." Is he out to get women?

"Boy brands"? "Girl brands"? What in the world are you talking about? What is this? The 1930s? A couple of characters and suddenly the MCU is a "girls brand ewww"? Seriously, dude?

Did you even see the movie? It's a movie about superheroes and supervillains who happen to be women. What's wrong with that? You could have told the same exact story with an all male cast. It certainly wasn't all "Yay Girl Power!" or male bashing. Captain Marvel doesn't walk up to Nick Fury and say "Obviously since you're a male, you can't handle this." If it had been a CW DC show, you'd have a point. But none of that goes on in this at all.

I liked this movie. I thought it was the most fun Marvel movie of the year, even more so than Guardians. It's the one I'm most likely to get a 3D Blu Ray of.

And by the way, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny didn't make that brand into a girl's brand either. PWB's character doesn't overshadow Indy, And Indy's the one with the majority of the answers. It, too, was a good movie. However, a crowd that wanted to be outraged to be outraged used a word they don't understand (woke) and labelled it as such.

Even Star Wars didn't go from being a boy's brand to a girl's brand. Yes, Rey is something of a Mary Sue, but Star Wars has a long history of strong female characters. Or are you forgetting Padme and Princess Leia?

Besides, why is there even a thing like labelling movies as being strictly for boys or girls? Why can't they be for everyone?

One word. Barbie
One number. 1.4 Billion Dollars

Barbie "is" a girls brand and the movie was marketed towards girls and women. It made 1.4 Billion dollars.
Marvel "was" a boys brand and the last 2 phases have also been marketed towards girls and women. How'd that turn out for them?

This is the difference between the reality of what is, and the fantasy of what you think it should be. This ain't about feelings, only the bottom line which is what Hollywood used to care about. After recent events (Covid, billion dollar movie losses, multi-billion dollar streaming losses) it's all they will go back to caring about.

The woke mob are best ignored. They will trash a movie or TV show relentlessly before the movie/show comes out. They then look to see how said show performs and then they pivot. If the show flops they are like, 'See, told ya' and if the movie is a success they will make every excuse under the sun why and in some cases pit properties against each other when at first they trashed both properties (see; House of the Dragon and Rings of Power).

So they are best ignored.

I must have missed where Barbie was a Marvel movie. Oh, that's right. It's not.

Must have been a Disney movie. Oh, that's right. It's not.

You also must not know a lot about comic books since superheroines have been around since forever. Or did you never hear about Wonder Woman?

You must also have missed that Black Widow was part of the MCU from Phase One, along with characters like Peggy Carter and Pepper Potts. And Phase Two gave us The Wasp. The Scarlet Witch, and Gamora among others. So the presence of these strong female characters have been around for the entirety of the MCU.

The average MCU fan has felt that Black Widow should have had her own movie as far back as Phase 2. The fact that Marvel chose to do the movie after killing her character off is a bit of an insult.

And maybe you can explain how Shang Chi, Doctor Strange 2, Spider-Man NWH, Quantumania, and Guardians 3 were marketed as "Girls Movies".

Shuri only became Black Panther because Chadwick Boseman died. Thor Love and Thunder adopts Jane becoming Thor, something that was done in the comics years ago.

TLDR: I reject your theory.

Again, did you actually watch these things or did you just choose to listen to a jackass like The Critical Drinker?

TLDR; Did you know that Disney bought Star Wars and Marvel because they realized that they had nothing to appeal to the male market?

If you are genuinely interested in the answer to your question and mine then watch a couple minutes of this video starting at 5 mins and 38 seconds. I've posted it before, but this directly answers your question. Listen to what she says happened after Disney purchased those properties.

BTW GotG3 was effectively a solo project and NWH is a Sony project. Neither are commonly seen as being part of Phases 4 and 5 and neither movie was marketed that way.

I think it's going to be less like Avengers 1-2 where they were an actual team and more like Endgame where it was just every hero alive and they worked within teams for different subplots.

That's a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. Still won't work though because it doesn't answer my question. The Avengers was essentially lightning in a bottle requiring lots of things to go right. Right now Disney is a company where everything is going wrong. Also recent movies have shown that they no longer have the talent in house to produce any successful movie, never mind an Avengers movie.

But who could be the new Avengers?
They should have been the characters from Phase 4 and 5. But She-Hulk is hated by the core audience, Shang-chi has only been seen once and the Young Avengers like the Marvels are DOA. That leaves; Ant-man & Wasp whose movie bombed. Dr Strange, no longer Sorcerer Supreme and Wong. Spider-man owned by Sony, Thor who is a meme, Hulk who is no longer Hulk, and Sam Wilson's Captain America who like it or not, has not been accepted.

But who is our RDJ or even Chris Evans? If the Avengers included Yelena and Red Guardian then David Harbor, Florence Pugh and Benedict Cumberbatch could fill in I suppose? But personally I think too much damage has been done.
