A local theater here in Austin (AFS Cinema) is screening a “newly restored” DCP of the 144min cut. It doesn’t say whether it was a 4K restoration or not, but maybe a new release from this restoration is on the horizon? A UHD blu-ray from Warner would be great.

It's going to be playing in theaters again Oct 30&31st at some Regal Cinemas. I wish there was one near me for this, because there are a bunch of movies I would go see during this "Horrorfest" promotion they are doing.

Been sick on the couch lately and watching a lot of commentaries. Finally watched the one on here... man, not a great track. The camera dude talks more than the film historian, and towards the end of the movie neither talks much at all. Bummer.

Not Kubrik's best work in my opinion. Some day I may see it in it's entirety and will probably realize that all the pieces I have seen were the whole movie, just not in order.

I loved it when I saw it in the theater and my appreciation keeps growing with every viewing.
I can't think of another Horror film (not the book) as complex.
It's a Masterpiece.

It has a well deserved reputation.
I say, don't give up on it.

Edit~ I checked out the UK and Canadian releases last night and both look like up-scaled DVDs.
This film deserves better.

Huh? You're talking about the BD?

They're using the same transfer as the US release. It's a quality transfer as far as details go, but some colors are off, at least in some scenes. Definitely much better than an upscaled DVD at any rate.

Unfortunately I posted after watching only the beginning of both BDs last night.
I was comparing the two releases and it was the less than stellar opening credits that stuck with me.

I just finished the UK disc and as you said it's quite good otherwise.

I watched the “newly restored” DCP at the AFS Cinema today. The colors looked pretty great. There was plenty of saturation on the right objects (Wendy’s red boots, her yellow jacket, the orange/red pattern on the carpet, the blood, etc) and nothing seemed oversaturated or anemic. There was also a very nice layer of film grain throughout that looked very natural. Fine detail was a bit lacking but then again the film never struck me as one being shot with a lot of intended fine detail. So in that regard I thought it looked fine. I’m not sure if maybe it was a 2K scan, or if that was just due to the lenses used, or another condition while it was being shot, but it looked fine. No complains there. The only thing that did bother me was that contrast seemed a bit too pumped. Detail was lost in some bright objects (lamps and such) and there was some black crush in low-light areas. Again, I’m not sure if it was intended to be this way but it didn’t look natural to me. Overall I’d give it a 4/5. I haven’t watched the blu-ray recently but I’ll probably pop it in tomorrow to make a rough comparison.

Sound was great overall. There were a couple of scenes when a hiss was present and it obviously sounded a bit dated throughout, but nothing really to complain about. 4.5/5 for me on this area.

I have to say it was pretty great watching on the big screen. I had never gotten the chance to before but it really made me think of it in a different way, and had more impact as well. I was also amazed at how well the film holds up today, I left the theater pretty scared . Kubrick really knows how to get under your skin psychologically and use the horror imagery to amplify it. 5/5 for the film itself (obviously).

The only thing that bothered me at the theater was that some guy kept playing with a bugger he obviously had stuck in his nostrils. He kept breathing it up and down (making noise) every 30 seconds for about a full hour instead of just going outside and blowing his nose. It was just distracting and disrespectful (and a bit gross) and other people kept turning his way obviously annoyed as well. Thankfully I was still able to enjoy the film but I still wanted to walk up to the guy and shove a tissue up his nose to stop the noise.

Sounds like shades of Close Encounters of the Third Kind '17...

There's also frozen grain in some shots and motion smearing throughout the film. Mediocre transfer.

For some reason one of the creepiest parts in The Shining to me is when Hallorann telepathically asks Danny, “Would you like some ice cream, Doc?” The way the camera zooms in and how the actor delivers his line mixed with the creepy music is really effective. I bet it would be even creepier to someone who was watching it for the first time and didn’t know what kind of character Hallorann was. Scatman Crothers really added something to this movie.

Edit: “How’d you like some ice cream, Doc?”

Hell yeah! That exact part ALWAYS turned my stomach when I was younger.

Why was I watching it as a kid?!?

Because when it was on, especially that scene, my dad would announce to the house, "THE ICE CREAM SCENE IS ON! GET IN HERE!!" And we'd all come running in and watch. Haa.

I didn’t realize there was a shorter version of the movie until reading about it recently. According to movie-censorship.com, “Kubrick said that Europeans were more smart than Americans and would not need the additional stuff to get used to the background of the story.” Did Kubrick really say this? That’s hilarious if he publicly stated that. It also states,” It is important to mention that no version was preferred by him. Both have Kubrick’s blessing and can be considered as two single director cuts.“ I’d be curious to watch the shorter version. If cutting out 25 minutes can make the film tighter and more intense, that sounds interesting to me. Is this a similar case to James Cameron’s Aliens? I much prefer the shorter version of that movie.

People claim the shorter version is more intense. I don't think so. I grew up with the shorter version and I always thought the movie was very good, but not a masterpiece. Then I saw the longer US Cut and suddenly it all clicked for me. The longer version is indeed a masterpiece and a masterclass in film making. It adds much more dread and the feel of isolation. Which makes the movie much more scary imo. Love the incredble slow-burn.

Yeah I just can't imagine things missing from the US cut. The incredible slow burn of it like you said makes it all the more creepy IMO and also next to impossible to do as successfully as this.

The shorter cut is much better. Mainly because it gets rid of the skeleton scene, which I've always found to be beneath Kubrick.

But as he co-wrote and directed the scene, it isn't beneath him.
