Erm, no it's not. And if you don't think it will be mainstream after Avatar then you're completely clueless. The only real obstacle is that it's a couple bucks too expensive.

I have seen Avatar 4 times now.. three in 3D and today in 2D.

I went with a group of six people the second time and out of those, three of them had headaches. This issue of 3D causing some people issues is the only thing i can see holding 3D back. It's still great in 2D, but just doesn't have that pop the 3D had.

That said, the new 240hz TVs have the option to do both, so i can't see why 3D wouldn't at least be offered. As far as the norm, i'd have to say vision issues with people may hold it back.

/Shrug... just thinking out loud...

Life itself is in 3-D. And that's pretty mainstream.

I don't think 3-D will go mainstream either. People are prepared to sit through one film in ten wearing ridiculous glasses, but the novelty will soon wear thin. Already I'm far less excited about 3-D than I was when I saw Beowulf. It's just another distraction from telling good stories.

3-D has a LONG way to go before it resembles "real life". It's still cinema ratio for starters, with people's heads and bodies out of shot!

So Horner will be suing Horner then!!!

Mmmmm for those who spotted similarities between this and other Horner scores, don't forget Vibes, Aliens, Uncommon Valor and The Rocketeer which made appearances in Avatar too :-)

3-D didn't seem as big as a deal that everyone has made it to be, yes, the immersion is nice but it is 50/50 where I have a headache or a badly manufactured pair of glasses the dig in to my ear, hurting me for 2.5+ hrs, or when I enjoy it. I will be seeing it in 2D at some point. I will be happy with the 2D Blu-Ray.

Q&A with James Cameron, from Variety:

Right now, 3-D is pretty much being used for films that have some spectacle in them, whether it's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" or "U2 3D"; nobody's talking about using it for domestic dramas. But there are people wondering whether it will actually enhance the impact of character-driven stories. What are your thoughts on how 3-D changes the experience of watching actors act?

I plan to shoot a small dramatic film in 3-D, just to prove this point, after "Avatar." In "Avatar," there are a number of scenes that are straight dramatic scenes, no action, no effects. They play very well, and in fact seem to be enhanced by the stereo viewing experience. So I think this can work for the full length of a dramatic feature. However, filmmakers and studios will have to weigh the added cost of shooting in 3-D against the increased marketing value for that type of film.

In Avatar I found it distracting for two reasons:

Firstly the picture appeared slightly out of shape during the "actor" scenes. It didn't look natural to me at all and took me out of the movie. This could have been a projector issue at the cinema where I saw it (Odeon, not IMAX) but the rest of the movie looked fine so maybe it was actually crap!

It just doesn't look right. The effect still looks layered to me. There's a couple of layers of background, there's some foreground elements, there's the actor, there's the credits/captions/subtitles on what looks like a piece of glass in front. It's not naturally three-dimensional. This is fine in artificial environments (animated movies, the Pandora bits in Avatar) but falls apart when it tries to reflect the "real world".

Unlike stereo or surround sound which actually IS coming from multiple places around the room, 3-D images are fake, they are trickery, and it doesn't take long for your brain to realise that and reject what you're seeing as false. Hence, I imagine, the numerous headaches that the format seems to cause!

I still havent seen Avatar im going to see it next week and looking forward to it however i have a small nagging question.
In the trailers it shows what appears to be giant floating rocks in the sky... whats that all about? is it explained in the movie? because i find giant floating rocks hard to believe, i know its sci-fi but i like my sci-fi to try and stay in laws of physics and when it does leave them have a pretty good and believable scientific explaination. Thanks
