So for an 8 ft tall room you want the bottom of the subwoofer to be about 2 ft from the ground? I'm looking at building my riser this weekend like crazyBLUE's. And do you have to cover the riser with carpet? I was looking at sanding it and painting it black.

You want to dampening the riser as much as possible. Carpet will give you better dampening, will absorb some port noise, and will be less slippery. You don't want your sub to fall off the riser. Also, attach some foam under the riser and cover it with carpet.

That makes sense. I will have to find some black carpet then. I feel sort of crazy for making a riser for my Polk RM6750 sub, I mean it's bottom of the line. But I guess every little bit helps! I'm actually looking at building my own over the summer.

Both Home Depot and Lowes have small rolls of black carpet.

I just did my riser and bought the black carpet at Lowes. It even had a rubber bottom, which should further help to dampen the sub. The rug was about $10.00 for a 2'X3' piece, which was on a roll and they will cut how ever many feet you need.

EDIT: Considering the amount of activity that was going on in this thread, I can't help but feel kinda like I smell or something ....6 days and nothing since my last post above (typing this at 4:00 PM Thursday 4/30!)

nice, good point. I think me and crazy are just on two different plains, and the fact that he almost owns his place, he's got an advantage. We might be throwing a semi-permanent anchor here soon, so then we'll see how much we can have!

if you referring to thinking the thread was going to die, I was kind of feeling the same thing a couple days ago. Actually this whole forum kind of seemed to stop dead in it's tracks for awhile. I'd search for something interesting, but couldn't find anything. So I say, let's make this bastard interesting again!!! Where is JJ!!!

I just finished my riser. The legs are 5 inches high and the platform is about an inch thick. I decided to go with speaker carpet (like they use in cars) to cover the entire riser. Now I need to find some good, cheap dampening foam that I can get to put underneath the riser. I'm thinking of just buying bulk like crazyBlue did, and putting some behind my fronts and surrounds also.

I'm going to build some risers for my Monitor 70s this weekend. Should I get dampening foam under those as well?

I suppose putting foam under the stands for the 70's couldn't hurt anything tilapiah ! I've thought of A vary firm foam or rubber pad under my fronts !!
If I built stands for the fronts they would have to be vary short to keep the tweeters in line & the center out of the display !!!

Well yeah, but will it even make an audible difference to put foam under the riser of the fronts (that I have to build today )?

22” SubTrap (30 Hz) Large Subwoofer: $586

Wow, I didn't know the made something like that. I've been thinking about a cube like that, or maybe modifying an ottoman or storage cube filled with foam. I'm looking for the perfect-black-cube look. I wonder if I could put something together for less than $500!

No I didn't . They are 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 9" pieces of wood ! They are screwed into the stand & the sub is set on the legs . I have checked several times & the sub has not moved at all !

After I raised the sub up this much forsberg , It seems to me the low end blends much better with the rest of the sound coming from the other speakers .

Amen to that. I'm going to go back today to get another piece of plywood and some more carpeting. I'm going to make some isolation wedges to stick under my Monitor 30s. Before the weekend is over my living room should have 5 more risers: one under each Monitor 70, one isolation wedge/riser under each Monitor 30, and I'm going to fashion some type of riser to make my center sit much closer to the bottom of the TV. Do you guys have any suggestions for how to do that? I'll probably have to paint it or be clever with the carpeting because it's going to sit right near the vocal point of my home theater (my TV).

I never thought to simply have the sub rest on "legs" like you did. It would be soo easy for me to do the same thing I did for the legs on my riser and then simply place the sub on them as you did.

My wife just read what I was typing in this post and I got the perverbial roll of the eyes....she always gets this haunting "oh no, now what you are going to do" feeling when she knows I'm on this site......

Story of my life. I'm going to get an LED glass Blu-ray sign if I can find one. I saw one at our local Sound Pro store, but they wouldn't sell it to me. This addiction to making my HT better will never end.

Just make sure the legs are VERY secure under the sub ! like I said before mine has not moved . at first I thought it would fall over when it was hitting hard
