I think suggested this before but although I'm perfectly happy with TMP Theatrical, as a go between you could re-edit the extra scenes from the DC into the Theatrical without updating the fx shots.
So basically reedit the movie into its DC form but keep the Theatrical fx shots and add the extra TOS sound effects.

That could work as an in-between.

Also when it comes to STIV I grew up with the UK edition on vhs and dvd and really miss the intro not on the blu ray. I really want that added back as it helps the Genesis trilogy narrative.

Pretty sure a mate of mine recreated that intro in HD.

Surely we can all be happy here though; if you’re saying it’s 4K DC or you’re happy with the DVD then well, that already exists....So we can have the 4K TC, you can have the DVD DC....and we’re all (relatively) happy no?
Dude, Paramount isn’t nervously awaiting my feedback to know how to proceed. We’re all playing wish fulfillment here. I’m saying a 4K of the TC only and the DC only being on a DVD are both turd options. Yes, gun to head, I’ll stick with the DC on DVD, but it’s still a fat turd. I desperately want it on a 4K platter. This is just about the fact that, if we concede the original postulation that Paramount is willing and at least minimally motivated to remaster the DCs, but only for the matter of time and money, then I would far prefer to wait for those to come in due course then have Paramount shrug and say, “Ah, f**k, lets just toss the TCs out there and call it a day!”

They don't improve at all.
The difference is they don't ruin it.

I’m willing to concede that for VI, but not II and certainly not TMP, which is pretty demonstrably better in its DC form.

I like the slow motion picture personally.

I absolutely adore TMP and have vehemently defended it against its tidal wave of detractors for 40 years. I'm simply saying the DC is the superior version of it, and it's a marked improvement. TMP in any form is grand (and second only to TSFS, in my opinion, for representing True TREK), but now that I've seen the DC, I can't undo that.

I'd be disappointed if they redid TMP and only put a 4K remake of the DC on it.

I want theatrical and TV versions restored as well. They managed it with TWOK.

Bill Hunt from Digital Bits a couple of weeks ago did a poll where he asked people if they wanted TWOK in 4K or all ten movies. Not sure the results but I think it was leaning towards wanting all the films remastered. As Hunt is the go-to man for studios wanting to know what people want it's possible he's had discussions with them like he had already a couple of years ago.

I agree, once you go DC on that movie there's no going back.

I do actually find a lot to enjoy in it but I don't think some CG rock lords are going to transform my personal perception of the film.
The Final Frontier is a totally underrated movie and in some ways is better than The Undiscovered Country. The problem with doing a DC of the fifth movie is that there isn't enough to expand the movie which is ultimately what is wrong with that movie. They get to the planet far too quickly. Adding in the rock monster climax doesn't really add anything substantial.

Yeah this was a glaring omission. I didn't even know until recently it was missing from non-UK releases of the movie.

I mentioned this to Jamie Anderson about Space Precinct that the best way forward is to crowd fund individual episodes or seasons of a show (he said it was something he was considering for that show) if the studio isn't willing to cover the costs of restoration. Certain fans on YouTube have shown they can put out great recreated footage of Star Trek so they should be hired to do it:

This Voyager had me fooled it was a miniature from the pilot, nope it's CGI:

The cost of the restoration itself is not the problem. It's making money ON that investment which is the stumbling block.

What was TNG? nine million? I think DS9 would be close to double that. I bet the bean counters don't see much coming back after that.

I loved that intro, always watched it on my trusty VHS, never skipped it. Its jarring not to have it on recent editions.

On a side not, with reference to TWOK, personally, I really dislike the Dir Cut. For me, much of the newly inserted scenes interrupt the flow, despite the Scotty scene added explaining the overly emotional scene later when Peter Preston dies, regardless, I still prefer it without.

Thankfully, the BR of Trek 2 allows you to watch both. All special editions should be like this. Star Trek TOS, Aliens, ET all managed it, and I'm sure there are others, I just wish they were all like it. Imagine the 20 disc special edition of Star Wars (just ep4) that would be needed for all the different versions, dating right back to pre- A New Hope star wars! Sorry for straying off topic.

Yep, and Robert Meyer Burnett said that DS9 would cost at least $20M.

Don't apologise, for ye speaketh the truth. If we were to get the theatrical and director's editions for the relevant Trek films then we'd all go home happy and it should be really be the default position of every studio to offer that choice.

And I'm sure they could raise that capital from fans for the restoration. The road block comes after with manufacturing, distribution, and broadcast rights.

But more than likely the only people who'd want to cough up the dough for the latter are Netflix, Amazon or Apple. Who'd quickly lock it into being steaming/digital only.

So you want to cut them out, go fully physical, then you are going to be asking for a tidy $200 to $300, if we are being generous. Don't forget the limited heavy tat editions.

I'm probably missing out on a lot of minutia, but the main points are there.

I'm not trying to say it's impossible. I'm saying this is going to be the boutique of all boutique projects if it's to happen.

Would I personally spend hundreds on it? Aye I would. This isn't the day's of VHS and DVD. We are a niche, and if we are willing to chuck thousands at TV's, speakers, disc players ect. We should be accepting not all our sources come cheap.

Without sources, your TV, your projector, your speakers and AV receiver are nothing.
