I go to that place all the time. I just got back from vacation so I haven't been checking their calendar. Ugh. Well, I'll definitely be there for the 70mm screening of 2001, whenever it is.

Already been done. Stephen King along with his TV buddy Mick Garris did exactly that.

Why is the bitrate so low on this bluray? It's only 14.68 Mbps. That is so freaking low for a bluray isn't it? Does this need a remaster or is this the best this film print will look? It is a pretty cheap bluray right now but if it's going to have a 2k or possibly 4k remaster in the future maybe by Arrow or Scream Factory(Shout Factory) it might be best to hold off on getting this any time soon?

There's no way Warner will license one of the crown jewels of their library to them.

They did license Barry Lydon to Criterion, and I predict we'll get Lolita soon as well, but that's because those two have always been treated as afterthoughts in the Kubrick library, on both DVD and BD. I presume it's because those titles sell poorly compared to the others.

I can't see them ever licensing The Shining to anyone. The better hope is for a remastered BD from Warner.

I'd love it if they released a set with both cuts, but they still seem to be going by Kubrick's instructions, and making the first cut exclusive to the US and the second cut exclusive to the rest of the world. With what we know about how careful Kubrick was, I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn they're contractually bound to release the film that way.

How does it look on bluray? Does anyone own this version? Will Warner Remaster this or is this the best it will look? Why does it have such a low bitrate? 14mbps is not that much for a bluray.

Looks fine to me. It was one of the earlier BD titles, but I'm happy with it. I own both cuts, and prefer the shorter overseas one, but the masters both look pretty much the same, aside from the fact there are additional scenes in the US cut.

IIRC Australia got the UK cut in the DVD era but the US cut on Blu.

The UK has both versions of The Shining available on Blu.

The mini-series isn't actually that faithful to the novel either. The book goes to really dark places the mini-series couldn't, because of restrictions of network television at the time. Some things which work for the novel didn't work that well when visulised (the topiary animals) or at least it would take a more talented director than Mick Garris to make them work.

I too wouldn't mind a re-adaptation of the book and I could see it being done as a mini-series for a streaming service like Netflix. If done properly it would be very different from the Kubrick film and even the previous mini-series. I'd like to see the back story of The Overlook and its ghosts, Jack actually being transformed into the thing he becomes in the book (this only gets hinted at in a dream sequence in the mini-series, its most effective moment), the ordeal Wendy gets put though and the moment when Danny encounters something nasty in a concrete tube while playing, for me the scariest episode from the novel.

A good number of early Warner blu's were that way. Perhaps they were going for an encode that could be fitted on both HD-DVD and blu-ray. I didn't notice any glaring deficiencies when I saw the film but that was admittedly many years ago. It is quite likely that Warner will in due time do the fresh scan and remaster of this film (perhaps in 2020 for a 40th Ann edition) but whether that new restoration will be UHD exclusive or a remastered 1080p blu-ray will also be considered needs to be seen.

Ah, that's right, I totally forgot about that. From Amazon UK it looks like it was a limited release that quickly went OOP though.

Still available at HMV, where it's an exclusive.

Okay, I will wait for a rescan maybe in 4k-2k scan of 1080p. I am not gonna rush to get this. I do not like what I see. I'm not saying this is an ugly bluray or anything because I'm sure it looks fine but we all know that when something is given a 4k-2k scan it generally makes the movie look crisper even at 1080p. This bluray came out in 2007? That is now 11 years ago. We have better technology now and I'd assume they might be able to get a little more detail out of the movie.

Slightly off topic but I could have sworn there was a thread at one point with information about a BD release of the miniseries; anyone else recall that?

It's only the US cut though, right? Not both cuts in one case? That would be my ideal version.

Well it's been 11 years, so obviously you are not in a rush. This thing has long been in the dollar bin.

Hopefully all of Kubricks get a UHD. Basically all the Warner ones suffer from very low bit-rates.

The only release with the two versions is the HMV release, but the International Cut is the DVD, the Domestic Cut is the BD.

Warner just announced a January 24, 2020 release for the sequel Doctor Sleep. Maybe now we'll get a great 4K edition!
