Yeah I was in the same boat with my Pio players, seeing as I just updated their firmware dated 03/18 but a new one came out on 04/20 specifically to fill the needs of Avatar from what I hear. You might wanna check the Sammy website.

I got my copy at Target today and just finished watching it on my PS3. It looks amazing on Blu-ray. There was no grain at all! The one I got had a eco case.

That's not a problem or anything, as I just have to turn it up a little louder. Just a random observation.
I also noticed that. Mostly with the center channel

hmm, sounds like Dialogue Normalization with this DTS HD MA track like Transformers 2 IMAX Edition?

I believe it has a dialnorm value of -27 (like the "big screen" edition of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) as I had to set it 4dB higher the three times I watched the BD. But that's just a guess.

Perhaps they measured the track appropriately (rather than setting the dialnorm value arbitrarily) and they found that such a value was correct? Given this disc is intended as essentially a superbit BD, I doubt they just picked the value at random.

So there's really no coupons for this Blu-ray, huh? Wow. that's a first. I was so used to seeing coupons for every new blu-ray release...

You guys are making it difficult for me to wait until Saturday to watch this! LOL. I've never seen it and I know it's going to be great..I love James Cameron's work. I can't wait for the eye candy. I bet this will be a movie you can watch many times and it wont get old.

Either you need a pair of reading glasses or you got the wackiest, most goofy wal-mart in the country!

I got my 2 Disc set at Target for $19.99 + tax. It contains a DVD digital copy too. Just out of curiosity, I went to Wal-mart which is only a mile away. They had the same 2 Disc set for $19.96. Wow I would have save 3 cents! Glad I got mine at Target though. That way, I rewarded them with a purchase for their getting competitive with wal-mart. Had I gone to Wal-mart first, I would have bought it there more than likely.

I watched it after I got home. I was blown away by the PQ and AQ. I'll give it my reference grade 5.0/5.0 for both. The AQ was just incredibly awesome. I have a 3 subwoofer setup. The LFE and low bass were shaking my home off its foundations. It's the best BD ever released as far as PQ and AQ. I give the movie a 5.0/5.0 too. I am half blooded native American. I definitely formed a bond with that movie as did my native American friends and relatives when we saw it in the theater.

There is a downside. The bad news is the subtitles. They are the most awful, deplorable, downright utterly disrespectful of the movie subtitles anyone could ever come up with. The subtitles are yellow and in large font. They can show up anywhere on the screen and just jump from one location to another during a scene. Very distracting to say the least. I use subtitles at night when I want to watch a movie late in the night without disturbing others in the house. I won't be watching Avatar like that though.

Still that doesn't change my rating:

Movie = 5.0/5.0
PQ = 5.0/5.0
AQ = 5.0/5.0
SF = N/A
Overall = 5.0/5.0

I saw avatar in 3D 4 times, once on the imax and 3 in regular. this was my first time watching it in 2D. I also agree that it works without the 3D. I noticed more stuff about it in regular 2D. the PQ and sound is just out of this world. I agree with others that its demo material and then some.

I wonder if its so good, that it would hurt the 3D fad?
why go 3D when the blu ray 2D is just fine.

Jacob

Busy night for me!! Stop by target and pick-up Avatar, pick-up dinner, head to the mancave to watch NFL draft and NBA playoffs. Got to see if the Skins mess up their 4th pick in the draft.

Wife wants to wait until Fri to watch Avatar, but I just may start without her and watfh again on Fri

Methinks she will figure something is wrong with her plan when the subs kick in
