I really don't know how much better T1 can really look. The current release looks very film-like. I only expect minor improvements with the eventual new transfer, but should be interesting.

No, they should release one version that's as transparent to the film as possible (with grain intact) and people who don't understand and hate film grain should understand for once how to use the DNR setting on their player and display. They can wipe out anything they want that way.

Lowry does exactly what HeavyHitter explained.

Lowry is only a company for hire that would only do things the people who hired them wants. So, if Cameron wants the film to look grainy, it's going to look grainy. Simple as that.

Some of Lowry's stuff is excellent and has grain intact. It's much too costly to do two transfers of this nature for every release and it's nothing similar or as simple to releasing widescreen and pan & scan. It will never happen this way.

People who dislike grain need to actually understand it and film, or not be so selfish to ruin it for other people and use their own DNR instead of demanding the studios to release transfers which look like they were shot on live video.

I mean what is so hard about using the DNR controls on your display and player? Turn them both on max and you'll be happy to achieve the video game look.

This title is on sale at BestBuy for 12.99 for anyone that is looking for it at a good price. Your BB might not even know its on sale.

BTW this is not the version with the new slipcover. Its without the slipcover.

Hi,

I noticed and got frustrated with "white spots/flecks" that run through scenes. I ROBOT got okay reviews for picture quality, but when I saw these spots (sometimes 5-10 in running through on one scene or one shot) I cringed and was so shocked. MY blu ray copy of ORPHANAGE, UNTOUCHABLES and DARK CITY and even newer titles like MAX PAYNE and STREET KINGS have spots of varying numbers and intensity. Even GODFATHER BLU RAY RESTORED versions I was appalled to see big white spots (and they stand out further since GODFATHER films have a darker hue as their color scheme..).

I always wondered why the studios cannot spend a bit more budget on cleaning up these problems digitally and fix other problems (dirt, scratches, vertical lines, etc.), because after all, blu ray marketing promises "the most pristine crystal clear" picture and sound.

Only ZODIAC was pure and clean due to its digital filming (?)...

I don't mind some grain, but these spots (and dirt) could kill my viewing experience. I just hope STAR TREK motion picture collection blu ray has less of this problem... I hope...

Thanks for reading.

I'm really sitting on the fence for this one too. I've almost pulled the trigger a few times on this purchase but each time held back thinking a better version might come along in the future.

Has it been confirmed that Lowry is working on this? If so, I wonder if it'll look that much better than the current release, considering it's a low-budget, not-so-new movie. I guess the white specks and such can be cleaned up but for the rest ... I wonder.

White spots generally only appear on a single frame, so to let it ruin the entire movie is a bit overreacting, I think. Having someone going over the entire movie frame by frame isn't really cost efficient for a couple of specks, so it isn't always done. Zodiac had problems of it's own. The opening shot in the car, for example, looks really bad.

Well, if it's only one frame, that still is tough for me (especially when there have been Japanese consumers who complained about "dots" over scenes..)

but the problem is it is not just one frame. The spots appear in various parts of the movies. one or two frames here, another frame there, and so on.

they accumulate and can ruin a film. granted, some films are worse than others, but blu ray is being touted in Asia as the a source to present "pristine perfect" movies...

in regular dvds, these spots don't appear so much, but with blu ray, due to the depth and clarity, they seem to be more apparent.

Listen people, and understand... (quote) the Terminator was a movie that featured many opticals -- dirt was inside those opticals, always been -- so it's normal. Once the Lowry version is out, I'm sure we'll get a Bale, sorry Blade Runner professional looking version with the opticals re-composited from the negative, or cleaned up.

Thanks for clearing things up guys, I figured it was dirt on the print. Thanks for the heads up Jeff ont the Lowry restoration not being close to being released as I thought about holding out for it. I had assumed it was already complete and they were gonna be releasing it when T4 hits home release.

No. There is definitely room for improvement. A new master needs to be struck for T2 as well as the original Terminator. But that can't happen until James Cameron approves it. Unfortunately he is far to busy working on his new movie "Avatar" to do this.

Who cares about Avatar? We're talking about two of the most influential movies of all the time.
